Bits and Pieces

From the Editor

By Jack Dueck
Jack Dueck

This issue of Bits and Pieces honours two Canadian freedom fighters. The emotional tributes to two Canadian WWII pilots by Dave O’Malley of Vintage Wings will stir your hearts.

After a ten-year hiatus, the Hamilton Air Show returns this year. Mark your calendar for June 18 to 19. (See the Hamilton Air Show Returnsarticle from the January 25 issue of Hamilton Spectator.)

If you attended EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in 2009, you as a Canadian, taking pride in our aviation heritage, no doubt sat in the Ed Lubitz – Mark Taylor’s Silver Dart replica. Now Ed Lubitz and Mark Taylor are at it again. The 92-Year-Old Baby article describes their new project, an Avro Baby.

We also review the state of the Canadian fleet in 2010. Is its growth on the horizon?

Another subject we look at is risk. How do we mitigate risk in our aviation industry? I am thankful to Mark Rowe, Technical Coordinator, Sport Aircraft Association of Australia, and grateful for his article in the December/January Airsport that provided this material.

Finally we note some events this year for women interested in aviation. Mark your calendars for two important conventions this year including one in Montreal.

And don’t forget to answer our poll question about what EAA events you will participate in this year. Will you do more with your chapter? Attend a regional or national event? Maybe even travel to Oshkosh!
