Electronics Corner - AirVenture - There's an App for That

By Ian Brown, Editor - Bits and Pieces, EAA 657159

Once again there are iPhone, iPad, Android, and Kindle Fire apps for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. As with previous versions, the new version is sponsored by Sporty's Pilot Shop and includes the grounds map, list of exhibitors, presentations schedule, and - new this year - locations of the food vendors as well as their menus. The 2013 app is available now in your device's app store.

EAA's free Wi-Fi service makes the AirVenture app a really attractive option, along with the EAA Radio app. Other aviation events have left the provision of Wi-Fi to private companies, resulting in relatively expensive daily charges - how much per day is online information worth? EAA has consistently improved its Wi-Fi bandwidth and coverage every year.

Remember the AM radio? Well, if you take one with you to AirVenture, you can tune in to EAA Radio on 1210 AM/96.5 FM and listen to a variety of information sources including interviews, forums, and other activities, the daily broadcast of the air show announcer, and Theatre in the Woods. If you have ever stood near the loudspeakers, you will have noticed a time delay between the sound systems on the grounds and the radio broadcast, so you probably need to be close enough to the speakers to hear well or far enough away that you can use your radio without being confused by overlapping commentaries.
