Electronics Corner - Avare Aviation Maps

By Ian Brown, Editor - Bits and Pieces, EAA 657159

Avare (pronounced like aware) is an extremely functional moving map GPS aviation program for the Android family of tablets and phones. It is completely free. If you have been frustrated by reports of all of the aviation apps available for Apple products because you have an Android operating system, this one is for you. It's not available for iOS devices. It has a very user-friendly human interface with many intuitive functions such as long-pressing to get more information.

Charts and data currently available for all of the United States including Puerto Rico, plus some parts of Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. You can try it out here and you can find out whether it's available for your particular part of the globe.

You get access to all of the FAA VFR and IFR charts, plates, airport diagrams, METARS/TAFs, and GPS Taxi, and all of this is without charge and without advertising. You are invited, however, to make a donation.

Look for a user report on Avare in a future issue of Bits and Pieces.
