CANADIANS AT AIRVENTURE
OSHKOSH

By the time you're reading
this, many of you already will have made plans to attend
the greatest aviation show on earth, EAA AirVenture
Oshkosh, July 25 to 31. What started back in 1953 as a
small gathering of enthusiasts determined to build and
fly their own aircraft has evolved into this mega
aviation extravaganza! Typically with 12,000 arriving
aircraft; 40,000 campers; 800 exhibitors each year. If
something's happening in aviation, you'll see it at
Oshkosh!

EAA'S BLERIOT XI MAKES
FIRST FLIGHT
|
EAA's reproduction of a 1909
Type XI Bleriot reproduction got about 8-10 feet off the
ground earlier this month - flying for six to eight
seconds over the turf runway at EAA's Pioneer Airport in
Oshkosh. Tom Hegy, EAA 6849, was pilot-in-command of the
oil-spitting, 1909 Anzani-powered airplane and flew a
short hop that was the culmination of several test runs
throughout that weekend. Thanks to Vintage Wings of
Canada's Rob Erdos, who designed the test flight
program.

| Last
issue's column on mogas supplemental type certificates (STCs)
brought a number of comments, all of them warning of the
use of ethanol as a cause for concern, which hasn't been
sufficiently mitigated by a heavy ratio of avgas to

CANADA OPTS OUT OF AIRVENTURE

| We've
just been informed that due to budget considerations,
Transport Canada will not be attending EAA AirVenture
Oshkosh this year. This is a keen disappointment to
Canadian aviation buffs, who will miss the TC folks in
the Federal Pavilion. The presence of Transport Canada
officials at AirVenture allowed Canadians to catch up on
aviation rules that affect our flying, aircraft
building, and other related subjects. Read

don't know about you, but I'm always up for a good
cross-country tale. Jack Neima, founding president of
rejuvenated EAA Chapter 63, Winnipeg, recently retired
from his banking career with the Royal Bank, and he and
wife Lianne have moved to Stanley, Nova Scotia. Jack
shares his cross-country flight in his J-3. Enjoy the
first of three parts of this cross-Canadian odyssey. Read

AERO WORKS PRODUCT LINES FOR SALE |
| Charlie
Vogelsong is getting out of the aircraft tubing
business, but it won't be easy. The World War II B-17
pilot started selling aircraft bolts, hardware, and
eventually 4130 steel tubing after the war to support
his fellow pilots who still wanted to fly for fun. Some
65 years later Vogelsong has built Dillsburg Aeroplane
Works near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, into a
multi-million-dollar business that is the leading
supplier of certified aircraft grade tubing, as well as
a leading worldwide supplier of metal materials to Indy
Car and NASCAR. Read

RUTAN
AIRCRAFT EXPRESSED IN LEGO FORM
Jeff Rutan creates building plans |
Thousands
of people have built Rutan-designed aircraft, but soon
you may be able to build nearly all of them including
WhiteKnightTwo and SpaceShipTwo. Jeff Rutan and Cole
Zellner, Burt's grandson and Jeff's nephew, have
designed and built 60 models of both Rutan Aircraft
Factory and Scaled Composites aircraft from LEGO-brand
plastic building blocks. The 1/30- and 1/45-scale models
are impressive and all 45 1/30-scale models will be on
display as an exhibit at the EAA AirVenture Museum as
part of "Rutan Day" at AirVenture 2011 and
continue through the end of the year.

REVIEW: HISTORY OF THE LYNCREST AIRPORT |
Lyncrest
Airport, located just southeast of Winnipeg, within the
Perimeter Highway, began in 1958, developed by funds
supplied by Donald Paterson of the Paterson Grain
Company. Later Donald sold the property to the city of
Winnipeg, but pilots continued to use it as an airport.
Several times in its history, pilots struggled to find
the funds needed to save it from termination, never
expecting to see their money returned. Now two authors,
Jill Oakes and Rick Riewe, have written about the small
prairie airfield in a delightfully researched and
detailed history that belongs in every Canadian aviation
library. Here's the story of an airport that wouldn't
die.

The KR-2
Jack Cox's 1973 article
about the KR-2 started out like this:
In a recent phone
conversation with one of our EAA Designees, I asked,
"What's hot in your area?"
"Foam!" was the
reply.
"Foam" was in
reference to the "KR-1" homebuilt, the tiny
monoplane for which nearly 5,000 sets of plans had been
sold, putting it in rarified company with the Bensen
Gyrocopter, Jeanies Teenie, VP-1, and BD-5 as the
all-time sales leaders in homebuilts. At the time,
designer Ken Rand estimated around 100 were flying with
approximately 1,000 sets of plans sold in Canada, which
is amazing when considering that in 1973 there were
2,577 Canadian members of EAA. Read
