This month’s Bits and Pieces should reach you just about the time AirVenture gets under way. What better way to introduce this e-newsletter with our own account of our Oshkosh plans? Does it differ much from your own? Can you schedule the events for Canadian EAA members to your own schedule? We’d love to see you.

| AIRVENTURE 2011 |
Planning for AirVenture 2011 started soon after last year’s Sploshkosh. Visitors to AirVenture last year will remember the incredible effort by staff, volunteers, and visitors to make the best of an impossibly wet ground condition where aircraft and motor homes had to be disbursed wherever dry enough ground or parking spaces could be located.
Returning home in our motorhome, Jean and I debriefed our week of excitement.

FIRST IMPRESSION: ROOKIE VOLUNTEER TALKS ABOUT FIRST DAY AT VINTAGE WINGS
|
On a day reminiscent of a soggy watercolour painting, I participated at the Fifth Annual Volunteer (and Guide) Training Day given by Vintage Wings of Canada and held at their hangar at the Executive Airport in Gatineau. Do you know what to do if there is an emergency? Do you know what to do if you see an airplane leaking fluids? How do you control a fire? How do you control an obnoxious spectator? Are you good with people? What do VIPs expect? What do you do if you run out of supplies? These are just some questions that will need answers if you are to volunteer your services at Vintage Wings.

| JACK HARDOCK: PORTRAIT OF A CANADIAN FLYER |
| Jack Hardock was born in Winnipeg and raised in Northern Ontario. He joined the Canadian Navy in 1951, choosing as his trade aircraft engine man or fitter over airframe rigger, ordnance, or electronics. “I saw the aircraft maintenance as a bigger challenge than flying because you had to keep up with new systems and materials,” he says, “and there was always something new to learn. We worked in Harvards, Beech 18s, TBM Avengers, and Sea Furys.” Spending a year and a half on the Canadian carrier HMCS Magnificent (known as “the Maggie” to her crew), he toured Bermuda, the Caribbean, through the Panama Canal, and up the Pacific West Coast to Vancouver. Jack recalls his life at sea. Read more |
