Welcome to the October edition of EAA Chapter e-Gram.

Here at headquarters the weather is beginning to turn from summer to fall, the dust from EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2008 has settled, and planning has already begun for the 2009 event (only about 300 days until opening day!).

In a similar way, I'd encourage your chapter to take a look at your plan for the upcoming year. For many chapters, elections will take place during the next few months. As your new (or returning) officers prepare for their term of service, having a plan in place can help lead to success. While most chapters don't need an entire year to plan their activities, strategic planning is as necessary for your chapter's future development as it is for a Fortune 500 company.

Don't let the words "strategic planning" scare you. Simply put, you and your chapter members should discuss where the chapter is headed. You may want to start with a simple chapter member survey or even form a planning committee. No matter how you tackle the job, the result should be a plan for the future. Try some simple questions to stimulate discussion. Where does the chapter want to be in 12 months? If we are raising money, what do we plan to do with it? If we set a goal of increasing membership, how can we reach our goal? Your plan should also contain short- and long-term goals, and thoughts on how to achieve them.

To help you start thinking about your chapter's future, Alan Shackleton, a former chapter president and chair of the EAA Chapter Advisory Council, has prepared a reference paper about strategic planning for your Chapter. Take a look, the paper has some great ideas.

Good luck plotting the course for your chapter in the coming year. May it lead you to even greater levels of success!

EAA CHAPTER SERVICE AWARDS COMING SOON
EAA Chapter Service Awards are provided annually to all chapter officers and volunteers. The awards consist of a certificate and pin recognizing those who have served your chapter this past year. The certificates are printed based on the information your chapter provided at the time of renewal. Your chapter does not need to take any action to receive the service awards. They will automatically be sent to your 2008 Chapter President in early November. However, if there were changes in your chapter officer positions during 2008 please contact us so we can update your chapterís record and issue correct certificates for your chapterís leaders. We want to be sure to give proper recognition to those that have volunteered throughout the year to lead your chapter.
