Thank a Vet With Breakfast
EAA Chapter 1414, Poplar Grove, Illinois

"I didn't even know this airport existed," was one comment at EAA Chapter 1414's recent Thank a Vet With Breakfast event.

A cloudless sky, no wind, and a new chapter facility brought many local people out to the last pancake breakfast of the season. October is the month when the local veterans are honored for their service by Chapter 1414. Past breakfasts have also recognized mothers, fathers, and first responders for the significant offerings they provide for a stronger and more meaningful community. Read more >>

Eagle Flight Anatomy of a Successful Eagle Flight
By Chris M. Front, EAA 816258

I've been an EAA Young Eagles pilot for about seven years, and I've also introduced a number of adults to GA flying. As a middle-aged professional working for the FAA, I frequently come into contact with other professionals who are intrigued by the idea of personal flight but have never had the opportunity to experience it. Over the past several years, I've taken a number of adults for flights, and a few of them subsequently expressed plans to take flight training. Read more >>

Insurance and Renewal Packets Get Lighter
By Liesl Wrolstad, EAA 1011919, Insurance and Safety Specialist

As chapters receive their annual renewal packets this month, you may notice something missing; the 2014 Premises/General Liability Insurance Form will not be included in the renewal paperwork this year. Instead, we are separating and moving the insurance renewal process to an online form, not unlike the form that chapters are accustomed to using to request event insurance.

Each chapter will receive an e-mail providing the link to the online form, along with instructions and the timeline to complete and submit it. Upon completion, the submitter will be sent an e-mail indicating the premium cost for his records. The address to send payment may also be sent. Here at EAA headquarters, we will have the insurance information immediately and be able to request the chapter's annual certificate of insurance right away when payment is received. This new method will expedite the process and avoid any interruption in coverage.

Of course, the first time through any process may have a bit of a learning curve. EAA's Risk Management Department is ready for your questions and able to help walk you through the form if you need assistance. As always, do not hesitate to contact me at 920-426-6106 or via e-mail with any questions or concerns.

Foreshadowing the EAA

A letter to the editor appears in the April 1953 edition of Flying magazine (from the Chapter 113 newsletter).

Regarding construction of home-built aircraft - I am in the process of reorganizing the "Experimental Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association" here in Milwaukee. I started the organization in 1951, then was sent to Korea as a C-47 pilot.

Since returning home I have had numerous requests to reactivate the organization, and with the backing of our local CAA inspectors, we have had considerable interest in the building of experimental aircraft. In fact, we have 13 home-built, experimental aircraft in the Milwaukee area either flying or under construction. I have completed one and flown it for 75 hours, and have another nearly completed.

I would appreciate hearing from individuals who are interested in the building of home-built aircraft and the association. From some of the performance we get in home-built aircraft, manufacturers could take note. - Paul H. Poberezny

Why Build an Airplane?
By Mike Clayton, EAA 802344, EAA Chapter 44

Why build an airplane? Why build anything?

People are unique on earth. They seem to, for the most part, be driven to build things. Now these "things" are not necessarily bridges, buildings, cars, airplanes, or any other stuff - although a lot of us do these things. We also build relationships, families, stories, legends, and other less tangible things. We want to create something new. Read more >>
