More Than 450 Young Eagles Fly During Skycatcher Tour
Jeff Skiles flies son of Flight 1549 passenger as Young Eagle
April 5, 2011 – Young Eagles Co-Chairman Jeff Skiles and EAA chapters in four communities opened the world of flight to young people over the past two weekends, as more than 450 kids were flown during EAA’s Young Eagles Skycatcher Tour that wrapped up March 27 in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
Last Monday’s weather delayed Skiles’ final leg of the journey, which was flying the Cessna 162 Skycatcher – the grand prize in this year’s EAA Share the Spirit Sweepstakes – to the Sun ’n Fun Fly-In at Lakeland, Florida. But good weather prior to that allowed for excellent events with Chapter 32 in St. Louis and Chapter 863 in Lebanon, Tennessee, on March 19-20, and with Chapter 242 in Columbia, South Carolina, and Chapter 288 in Spruce Creek.
A highlight of the Spruce Creek flight rally was the opportunity for Skiles to fly Michael Jones, the son of a passenger on the famed US Airways Flight 1549 aircraft that Skiles and Sully Sullenberger successfully landed on the Hudson River in January 2009. Michael’s dad, Casey Jones, discovered that Skiles would being Young Eagles in Spruce Creek and brought his family to the event.
