'Hello' Goes a Long Way

May 15, 2012 - I want to thank the chapter leaders and members who have contacted me since my last "Hangar Flying" column. It is good to hear from you. Thank you for welcoming me in my new role at EAA.
I have really enjoyed our conversations and realize we have the most passionate members on the planet. I enjoy hearing about what our chapters are doing to grow membership, and the activities they host to reach out to the community and to young people.
I have heard from various EAA members over the years that, when they attended their first chapter meeting, no one ever greeted them or said hello. So, I want to share an idea that was mentioned to me by Dan Majka (Chapter 790 past president and current EAA board member).
At each meeting, Dan would appoint a greeter and the greeter would do just that, greet the members, especially the new faces in the crowd. The greeter would introduce the new attendees to the president of the chapter and to other members. Also, he or she would get contact information to keep the potential new member posted of upcoming events and meetings.
This is a simple, yet powerful tool to grow our membership. So at your next meeting, if you do not know someone, please take the time to introduce yourself and welcome them to the chapter meeting. Something so basic can have a huge impact.
Please keep in touch and please let me know what we can do to help you prepare/plan for your next event and grow membership in your chapter. Also, let me hear about ideas that are working for you and your chapter. Once again, I can be reached at 920-426-5914 or email@example.com.
