It's Tax Season for Chapters: Filing Time for 990-N e-Postcards
While personally many of us are finishing up the annual task of submitting our tax information to the IRS, tax filings are also needed for your chapter. The IRS has been simplifying the process of filing the 990-N e-Postcards over the last several years. Now once your chapter is in the IRS system, it only requires a few minutes to complete the form.
For those chapters that have previously submitted 990-N, simply go to the "how to file" area on the IRS website and complete the required information by the 15th day of the 5th month of your tax year. For chapters operating on a tax year of January 1 to December 31, the e-Postcard would then be due by May 15.
If your chapter has annual gross receipts under $5,000 and has not previously filed a 990-N, then the IRS will need to set your chapter up to allow filing of the e-postcard. Contact its Customer Account Services at 1-877-829-5500 to get set up in its system. Visit the IRS website for details on the annual filings for those organizations that are not required to file an application for tax exemption.
