Oshkosh Convention Camaraderie and Food
By Trevor Janz, EAA 656941
EAA Manager of Chapters and Eagle Flights
Let's face it; we love food at any EAA gathering, and this year at our convention we had excellent food available all over the grounds. But most important, it's free food. We pilots love free food; we will fly hundreds of miles for free food. Because where there is good food, there are fellow pilots and EAAers enjoying each other's company.
We just wrapped up our 61st convention here at Oshkosh. On Saturday morning we enjoyed a complimentary (aka free) breakfast buffet for chapter leaders. Close to 300 chapter leaders were in attendance at the Founder's Wing of the EAA Museum. This was a great place to host the breakfast, and it really had a feeling of being a very nice hangar. Paul Poberezny's first homebuilt (Waco Glider) and the famous Baby Ace, both featured in Mechanix Illustrated back in the 1950s, hang from the ceiling.
After a year as EAA's manager of chapters, it was nice to see so many familiar faces that we met across the country this past year. EAA Chairman Jack Pelton gave an introductory welcome to the chapter leaders and shared his lifelong association with EAA that started with his father being a member of EAA Chapter 1 at Flabob Airport in Riverside, California. Jeff Skiles, vice president of Communities and Member Programs, also spoke to the chapter leaders and gave a quick overview of happenings at EAA HQ. He also reminded the group that we here at EAA HQ work for you, our members and chapter leaders.
Congratulations to the following winners of our Chapter Awards:
Web Editors: Mark Cattell, EAA 719074, and George Ford, EAA 1048190, of Chapter 1111, St. Helens, Oregon. www.EAA1111.org.
Major Achievement: Barbara Walters-Phillips, EAA Lifetime 316261, Chapter 74, Winter Park, Florida
Newsletter Editor: Chuck Fisher, EAA 1030744, Chapter 35, San Antonio, Texas
We also recognized Pete Burgher for all of his support of chapters through the Burgher Fund. The fund matches chapter's donations up to $37,000 to the Burgher Fund. This helps fund the chapter websites, ChapterGram, Leadership Academy, Chapter Video Magazine, and will also help fund other programs that will benefit EAA chapters. Please donate to the Burgher Fund with your next chapter renewal in 2014.
As many of you may know, Sean D. Tucker is our new Young Eagles Chairman and will serve in that position for the next two years. Sean's infectious energy will be a leading force in the Young Eagles program going forward. We thank Sully Sullenberger and Jeff Skiles for serving as co-chairs over the past four years. Jeff remains on EAA staff as vice presided of communities and member programs (which includes Young Eagles and chapters).
Jeff and I will be heading to the East Coast in October and November for more Grass Roots Pilot Tours. We will keep you posted where and when. We look forward to getting out and visiting more chapters as we head towards winter.
I want to thank all the chapter members and EAA members that volunteered to make this one of the best conventions on record. Without you, it could not happen. Thank you!
