EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2008

MONDAY, JULY 28, 2008 

The awesomely huge Boeing Dreamlifter, a 747-400 cargo loader, makes it first major aviation appearance in Oshkosh. The behemoth can hold more cargo than any other airplane in the world, and was designed specifically to transport major assemblies of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Only at the World's Greatest Aviation Celebration are people able to see interesting and unique aircraft like the Dreamlifter. AirVenture crowd skeptical of 
enforcement proposals on 51 percent rule

Two weeks ago, the FAA issued a proposed new policy for administering and enforcing the 51 percent rule-the requirement that an amateur aircraft builder must complete "the major portion" of an amateur-built (A/B) aircraft. FAA officials discussed the proposed new policy and the reasoning behind it at a lively public forum attended by close to 200 people Monday afternoon at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh.

YOUR DEPARTURE CHECKLIST ...
You've got a lot on your mind as AirVenture approaches, and we'd like to remind you of a few things. Most importantly, be sure you're up-to-date on any temporary flight restrictions or NOTAMs along your route, and be aware of the changing parking status on the field at Wittman Regional Airport. And don't forget to pack your membership card and pre-purchased tickets!
Eclipse CEO Vern Raburn Steps Down
Eclipse Aviation founder and CEO Vern Raburn, who introduced the VLJ (Very Light Jet) concept and changed general aviation in the process, announced he was resigning his positions at the company effective immediately at a press conference at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2008 this morning. Read more

White Knight Two Rolled Out in Mojave
Burt Rutan, of Scaled Composites, and Sir Richard Branson, of Virgin Galactic, unveiled the long-awaited White Knight Two aircraft in Mojave, California, on Monday morning. In a dramatic morning ceremony, this successor to the legendary White Knight One aircraft was rolled out of its hangar in front of a gathering of media and industry representatives. Assembled media at Oshkosh took part in a video conference held at the EAA Vette Theater and had the opportunity to ask questions of Virgin Galactic President Will Whitehorn and Scaled Composites' Bob Morgan. Garmin Announces Products, Improvements
Garmin International had several announcements on opening day, led by the FAA-approval of the company's G600 primary flight display product line. The approval allows for the G600 to be installed on 785 different makes and models of aircraft via the supplemental type certificated approved model list on normal and utility category aircraft, including twin combustion engine and turboprop engine aircraft with a certification weight up to 12,500 pounds. Cessna Debuts Production SkyCatcher
Cessna unveiled the first production Model 162 SkyCatcher today, complete with a production interior. Three airframes have now been completed against an order book totaling more than 1,000 aircraft. Read more

ICON Aircraft Makes Public Debut
Aviation, and in particular, sport flying, is but one option competing for the discretionary dollars people have to spend. ICON Aircraft, who unveiled its all-new, amphibious, folding wing A5 light-sport airplane to the public Monday morning at EAA AirVenture, is doing all it can to win that competition. Read more
