CHALLENGES CAN'T STOP AIRVENTURE SITE PREP
Rain on Thursday offered an additional challenge to ground preparations
for AirVenture, but those challenges are being met and both camping and
aircraft arrivals continue
to be accommodated at the grounds at Oshkosh.
“There are challenges every year when
preparing for and during Oshkosh,” EAA chairman/president Tom
Poberezny said. “The advantage of nearly 60 years of fly-in experience
is that plans are in place to meet situations such as this. We are
making the necessary adjustments based on current conditions." Read

WHAT
IS IT?
Sneak Peek of Mystery Plane to be
Unveiled Monday at Oshkosh
The
wraps are starting to come off a project we've been dying to tell you
about for weeks!
It involves an ingenious modification to
an existing design, creating a new type of aircraft that can only be
described as "utterly unique." We feel it is likely to be one
of the big talking-points of AirVenture 2010, and certainly embodies the
spirit of innovation that runs strong in the EAA homebuilding community.
Take
a look at the sneak-peek fly-by video and leave us your best guess
as to what it might be!
The aircraft will be rolled-out at the
new EAA Homebuilders' Hangar at 8:15am on Monday morning. All attendees
are invited.

SUBSONEX
JET TO RESUME TESTING AFTER AIRVENTURE
Sonex announced its SubSonex single-place jet aircraft is
ready to resume testing after AirVenture. Following a
series of initial high-speed taxi tests, the Sonex
Aircraft Hornets' Nest Research and Development team
determined that a review and modification of the aircraft
design was necessary to achieve acceptable handling
qualities for the average pilot. Due to the increased
power of its new PBS TJ-100 engine, the team determined
that a tricycle gear configuration was needed to increase
yaw stability on the ground in the transition phase
approaching takeoff speeds. The SubSonex will be on
display with its new gear modifications at the Sonex
Aircraft Homecoming and Open House Fly-In on Sunday, July
25, and at the Sonex Aircraft Hornets' Nest R&D
AirVenture booth in the North Aircraft Display Area, #622.

| Search and Rescue With Drones |

|
Researchers at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, have developed low-cost search-and-rescue drones (SAR) that can find lost people in wilderness areas. With no need for a human pilot controlling the UAV, the aircraft will fly itself, use terrain factors to determine where the lost person is most likely to go, then use pattern recognition to spot any human bodies in the areas it searches. |
Invisible Paint for Planes |
 |
Nanoflight, an Israeli company, has developed nanotechnology paint that absorbs radar signals then releases them as scattered heat waves. Coating a plane or missile with Nanoflight paint makes it extremely hard for current radar technology to detect and does so at a much lower cost than a typical stealth aircraft. |
| AVX
Transformer Concept Aircraft |
 |
AVX Aircraft Company has developed a concept aircraft for the DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) Transformer program. The AVX TX is designed to convert from ground vehicle to aircraft in 60 seconds, fly at 140 mph and get 250 miles on one fill-up. |
UAVs Refueling Other UAVs |
 |
Northrop Grumman is working on a project to take all risk to humans out of aerial surveillance and refueling of those surveillance planes. Using one Global Hawk, which can fly at 65,000 feet, for surveillance and another Global Hawk as a tanker allows refueling at much higher altitudes because most aerial refueling happens at 20-30,000 feet. |
VTOL Pulsed Turbine Transvector Jet |
 |
The pulsed turbine jet engine concept has simultaneous-independent, gyro-digitally controlled multiple jet engines. The transvector jet principle allows the pulsed turbine jet engines to more smoothly transition from vertical to horizontal flight, with the overall design having the unusual twist of using laser-activated steam boosters for final approach cushioning on vertical landings. |

Q
& A:
Question of
the Week
For EAA
Information Services
I purchased a homebuilt from the original builder a
couple of years ago. Can the builder continue to do
the annual condition inspections on the aircraft? He
is not an A/P or AI, but has a repairmen's
certificate from the FAA. Can I compensate the
builder for his time to do an annual, if he can do
the annual inspection?
Answer: The
original builder can continue to perform the annual
condition inspections, as long as he has retained
the repairman certificate for the aircraft. The
repairman certificate does not have an expiration
date, and as long as it is not returned to the FAA,
it remains valid.
You may also
compensate him for the inspection by whatever means
you both agree upon.

AIR BILLET FUEL PUMP ADDRESSES SAIB ON OEM ROTAX
912 Corb Air now makes an updated Billet Fuel Pump that addresses
potential problems with Rotax models 912A, F, S, UL, ULS, and ULSFR
engines stated in Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB)
CE-10-36. The SAIB stated that in some cases, if the input pressure to
the mechanical fuel pump is high (e.g., due to an electric fuel pump
upstream), the output pressure from the mechanical fuel pump could be
excessive. This high fuel pressure may cause the engine to malfunction
from flooding and/or cause fuel leakage. Corb Air's AN fittings that is
said to resolve this potential problem. For information including
pricing, visit www.BilletPump.com.
