Ebneter's E-1 Sets Another Record
Arnold Ebneter, 84, of Woodinville, Washington, appears to have set another world aviation record for airplane fuel efficiency in his incredible E-1 airplane. Ebneter, EAA 450548, unofficially set the record on October 5 during a nonstop flight from Harvey Field in Snohomish to Spokane; Pendleton, Oregon; and back to Snohomish, using 62 pounds of fuel achieving 55 mpg. MAC'S BLOG: Should You Maintain VREF?
There are dozens of target airspeeds and their abbreviations all start with the letter "V" for velocity. Vx is the best angle of climb airspeed. Vy is the best rate of climb airspeed. VSO, stalling airspeed in the landing configuration, and Va, maneuvering airspeed. But VREF - the final landing approach airspeed target with the airplane configured for landing - hardly ever gets a mention in piston airplane flying.

New Data Credits EAA With Helping Increase E-AB Safety
There was encouraging news for homebuilt aviation in the safety data contained in AOPA's annual Nall Report on GA safety, which was released last week. The 52-page report contains comprehensive statistics on accidents in all facets of GA during calendar year 2010, the most recent year for which there is sufficient data.
EAA was credited for its role in increasing amateur-built aircraft safety with its many educational initiatives. Read more >>

U.S. Unlimited Team Named for 2013 Championships
The U.S. Unlimited Team is in place for the 2013 World Aerobatic Championships set for October 9-20, 2013, at the North Texas Regional Airport in Sherman/Denison, Texas (KGYI). The team is Rob Holland, Goody Thomas, David Martin, Michael Racy, Nikolai Timofeev, Debby Rihn-Harvey, Robert Armstrong, and Melissa Pemberton. Michael Steveson is the team manager. Read more >>

Milestone: SpaceX’s Dragon Resupplies the ISS
This week's SpaceX Dragon spacecraft delivery flight to the International Space Station marks a key milestone in commercial spaceflight. The flight that began Sunday, October 7, is the first of NASA's 12 contracted resupply missions with SpaceX in the $1.6 billion Commercial Resupply Services contract that runs through 2016. EAA Safety Efforts Noted in GAO's GA Report
The General Accounting Office (GAO) has recognized EAA's safety programs as key contributors in improving GA safety, particularly for experimental amateur-built aircraft.
The GAO late last week released its report, which the agency compiled at the request of members of Congress. The study looked at all segments of the GA community and interviewed those in both government agencies and organizations within the GA community. The GAO interviewed EAA representatives twice during the study period. Read more >>

Sully Goes Supersonic with the Blue Angels
EAA Young Eagles Co-Chairman Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger flew in a U.S. Navy Blue Angels F/A-18 Hornet as San Francisco Fleet Week kicked off. Sully invited six Young Eagles from local Bay Area EAA chapters to watch the takeoff and landing and meet the Blue Angels. Read more >>

FAA Urges Completion of Annual GA Survey
The FAA is reminding pilots who received a postcard invitation to participate in the 34th annual General Aviation and Part 135 Activity Survey (GA Survey) to complete the survey as soon as possible. The survey deadline is November 30, 2012. The survey is the only source of comprehensive information on the activities of the GA fleet, including number of hours flown and the purposes for which owners and operators use their aircraft.
