What killed the piston twin? That's easy. It was the piston single. All types of piston airplane production have faded over the last 30 years, but the piston twin has nearly vanished. Only the Beech Baron 58 and Piper Seneca V remain in production by the major manufacturers. On the used market, piston twin values have plunged.

Ray LaHood Resigns
Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood has announced he would resign from that position after serving in the administration since January 2009. "I have let President Obama know that I will not serve a second term as secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation," he said in a statement to DOT staff on Tuesday morning. Read more >>

EAA Family Flightfest Planned for March 2-3
Discover the exciting world of aviation with an educational, interactive experience at EAA's Family Flightfest on Saturday, March 2, through Sunday, March 3. Scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, this popular family event features a variety of fun, hands-on aviation activities that educate and spark museum visitors' curiosity about flight. Lunch will be available for purchase each day between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. As always, EAA members are admitted free to the EAA AirVenture Museum. Italy's MW Fly Develops Experimental B25R 150-hp Engine
In 2012, Italian engine manufacturer MW Fly (formerly called Metalwork) introduced to the European market its B22 four-stroke, 2.2-liter, horizontally opposed, liquid-cooled aviation engine family. This year brings the immediate introduction of the B25R, rated 150 hp at 4550 rpm from a 2.5-liter displacement. Read more >>

Dr. Gregory Pinnell Receives FAA Safety Award
EAA's Aeromedical Advisory Council member Dr. Gregory Pinnell, M.D., received the Michigan 2012 FAA Safety Team Representative of the Year Award at last week's Great Lakes International Aviation Conference for his significant contributions to aviation safety. Read more >>

Waco Announces Great Lakes Paint Scheme Contest
The Waco Aircraft Company is holding a contest to decide what paint scheme it uses for its first Great Lakes 2T-1A-1 factory demo aircraft. The person submitting the winning entry will receive a prize package including a demo ride in the new biplane, winner's name on the plane, a Waco goodie bag, and a VIP invitation to the public debut launch event for the Great Lakes. Entry deadline is February 17, 2013, and there's no limit on the number of entries one can submit. Details are on the Waco Aircraft website.
