Many people and businesses are being harmed by the federal government shutdown, but aviation is pretty far up the list because it is regulated at the federal level, not state or local level. The government shutdown removed the people who make it possible for us to follow the rules, but the shutdown didn't eliminate any of the requirements. In aviation, we're collateral damage to a fight that is not ours.

Zenith Blog Update ZENITH BLOG: Steady Progress Continues
EAA's build team for the Zenith CH 750 project resumed checking off tasks in the builders manual this week as volunteers worked at three separate stations in the Kermit Weeks Hangar. Some of the jobs worked on included fuel tanks, outboard seat anchors, and baggage floors as we continue to make steady progress on completing the aircraft.

DOT Urgently Needs to Exercise Legal Authority to Reopen Aircraft Registry
In a letter to Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Anthony Foxx, the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) and a group of general aviation (GA) leaders made Tuesday a forceful argument for reopening the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA's) United States Aircraft Registry on the grounds that it is necessary for the FAA to provide "essential services" to ensure aviation safety, protect security and to fulfill U.S. international obligations. EAA Declines FAA Exemption for Young Eagles, Eagle Flights Pilots
EAA has notified the FAA that it is declining a partial grant of exemption that would have allowed Young Eagles and Eagle Flights pilots to obtain reimbursement for fuel costs and logging of flight time. While EAA welcomed the time the agency spent considering and formulating the partial exemption, its mandated record-keeping, coordination, and notification requirements would cause complete restructuring of the program with enormous time and expense burdens. Red Bull Air Races Red Bull Air Races Return to Action Next Year
The Red Bull Air Races will be back in 2014 with a seven-race circuit, the energy drink company announced Tuesday. The first scheduled race will be in Abu Dhabi, UAE, February 28-March 1. Red Bull first sponsored its first races in 2003 and ran the annual Red Bull Air Race World Championships through 2010. Read more >>

Redbird to End $1 Avgas Experiment Early
Redbird Skyport at San Marcos Municipal Airport (HYI), Texas, is ending its experiment in selling avgas for $1 per gallon on October 15 instead of carrying on through the entire month as originally planned. The "experiment" was designed to determine how the cost of avgas altered the amount of general aviation flying activity. Read more >>

EAA Shows Support of Wisconsin Recreational Use Statute at Committee Hearing
EAA staffers traveled to the Wisconsin state capitol in Madison Wednesday to offer testimony in support of Senate Bill 321, which would add noncommercial aviation to Wisconsin's Recreational Use Statute (RUS). Read more >>

US Advanced Team U.S. Advanced Team Selected at Nationals
Congratulations to the U.S. Advanced Aerobatic Team that will compete next year at the Advanced World Aerobatic Championships (AWAC) in Dubnica nad Váhom, Slovakia. The team was selected based on performances at last week's 2013 U.S. National Aerobatic Championships in Sherman/Denison, Texas. Team members include (from left) Julia Wood, Mark Nowosielski, Sammy Mason, Marty Flournoy (alternate), Matthew Lane, John Ostmeyer, Michael Hartenstine (alternate), John Howell, Steve Johnson, and Craig Gifford. The AWAC starts Wednesday and runs through October 20 at North Texas Regional Airport/Perrin Field (KGYI), Grayson County, Texas.
