EAA Hails Bill to Cut Third-Class Medical for Many GA Pilots
Reps. Todd Rokita (R-IN) and Sam Graves (R-MO) introduced a bill in the U.S. House Wednesday that seeks to abolish the third-class medical certificate for many pilots who fly recreationally. The General Aviation Pilot Protection Act of 2013 (HR 3708), co-sponsored by Reps. Bill Flores (R-TX), Mike Pompeo (R-KS), Collin Peterson (D-MN), and Richard Hanna (R-NY), would require pilots who fly recreationally to hold a valid driver's license in lieu of a third-class medical certificate and operate under specific limitations. Back on the Main Floor
A Hispano Buchon HA-1112 previously displayed in the EAA AirVenture Museum's Secret Projects area is being reassembled for display in the Eagle Hangar. These were licensed post-war copies of ME-109s, only powered by Rolls-Royce Merlins. Twenty-seven were used in the 1970 film Battle of Britain. This plane was acquired by Wilson "Connie" Edwards, EAA 78279/WOA 493, who donated it to EAA in 1979. It was formerly displayed where the Spirit of St. Louis replica exhibit hangs now. The assembly is slated to be completed by next week. See the photo gallery. View photos >>

J. Mac McClellan Blog MAC'S BLOG: Avionics Obsolescence Is Real
Not long ago I was talking to a pilot friend who said his Garmin GNS 430 couldn't be repaired because spare parts were no longer available. I was stunned. To me the 430 is still a miracle box, the first complete flight management system (FMS) for personal airplanes. Could this be true? I checked with the Garmin guys, and yes, some of the earliest GNS 430s can no longer be repaired. The problem is that parts of the original power supplies that were limited to only 28 volts are no longer available.

AME Group Objects to FAA Sleep Apnea Policy
he Civil Aviation Medical Association (CAMA), the professional organization for Aviation Medical Examiners who provide medical certification exams to the nation's pilots, has joined the consensus against the FAA's new sleep apnea policy announced last month. In a letter to FAA Administrator Michael Huerta, CAMA objected to the new FAA policy for a variety of professional reasons, most notably the lack of scientific evidence that links sleep apnea to heightened risk for aviation safety. EAA to FAA: Withdraw AD on ECi Cylinders
EAA is recommending that the FAA withdraw its proposed airworthiness directive (AD) regarding reciprocating aviation engine cylinder head assemblies manufactured by ECi Inc. because of a lack of data or adequate risk analysis performed by the agency. In comments submitted to the federal rulemaking docket on December 11, EAA joined other GA groups in urging FAA to withdraw the AD because the FAA failed to follow its own data-driven risk assessment process designed for airworthiness corrective actions.
