August 4, 2013 - "We're here to honor those who we have lost, but certainly not forgotten."
With those words EAA Chairman Jack Pelton read the list of names inducted to the EAA Memorial Wall on a Sunday morning whose weather perfectly replicated the previous week's. Several hundred people listened in stoic silence to the names at the annual ceremony that always signals the annual EAA convention is drawing to a close.
After Jack read the final names, several people - some whose loved ones were inshrined this day and others from past ceremonies - hugged and cried together. Bugler Joe Maehl masterfully performed "Taps," including holding the final note for 19-seconds.
Several minutes later, a six-ship formation made up of the AeroShell Aerobatic team's T-6s and Matt Younkin's Twin Beech soared overhead, one of the Texans peeling off to the right with smoke on.
When the ceremony was ended, there were more warm embraces, numerous people made rubbings of special names on the wall, and slowly dispersed to enjoy the final remnants of EAA AirVenture 2013.
