September 5, 2013 - Work began this week on a slight shift of the North 40 perimeter road at Wittman Regional Airport, part of the FAA-recommended project for the airport that already includes new service roads seen on the south end of the fly-in grounds this year.
The project is being is coordinated by Winnebago County, which owns the airport and leases much of the AirVenture site to EAA each year. The project will move the perimeter road curve around the west end of Runway 9/27 slightly west, so it runs parallel with the airport fence. The new road will connect with the current perimeter road on the north and south sides of 9/27.
The old portion of the road will be eliminated and reseeded to be used as aircraft camping to replace the areas eliminated by the new roadway. The old road base under the new grass will remain, however, to make it easier to taxi aircraft in that area in case of soft ground.
Winnebago County is also adding a service road inside the fence line that runs parallel to Foundation Road. That will run roughly along the western edge of AirVenture's Permit Parking Lot B, Homebuilt Camping, and Warbird Camping.
