July 24, 2014 - National Transportation Safety Board member Dr. Earl Weener returns to Oshkosh this year to present the “Meet the NTSB” forum, which will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30, in Honda Aircraft Forum Pavilion 7. His presentation will feature weather avoidance strategies for general aviation pilots, a discussion with Sport Aviation Editor-in-Chief Mac McClellan, and a question and answer session with forum attendees.
The NTSB singled out weather risk mitigation as one of its “Most Wanted” items for 2014, noting that “historically, about two-thirds of all GA accidents that occur in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) are fatal–a rate much higher than the overall fatality rate for GA accidents,” and that “a frequent cause of, or contributing factor to these accidents is hazardous weather.” The NTSB hopes to lower the rate of weather-related accidents with increased pilot education, better access to in-cockpit weather information, and improved pilot decision-making skills.
In addition to the forum, the NTSB has a full display in the Federal Pavilion where AirVenture attendees can meet NTSB staff and attend daily forums about GA safety and accident investigation.
“Participation at the Oshkosh airshow has become a staple for NTSB investigators and staff,” said NTSB Acting Chairman Christopher A. Hart. “This annual event provides us with an extraordinary opportunity to meet face-to-face with a large number of general aviation pilots and share lessons learned from our investigations with the aviation community.”
