Wingwalking Duo Recuperating After Crash |
Wingwalking
air show performers Kyle and Amanda Franklin are
hospitalized with serious injuries after making an
emergency landing while performing Saturday afternoon
(March 12) at Air Fiesta 2011 at the Brownsville-South
Padre Island International Airport. Amanda was able to
return to the aircraft before it crashed and Kyle is
being credited with some quick decisions in the air and
on the ground, which likely reduced the magnitude of
their injuries and may have saved Amanda's life. Read

Training Camp With Sergey |
What
an amazing week! I flew the Extra to Marana, Arizona,
early last month to meet with two-time World Aerobatic
Champion and Red Bull Air Race pilot Sergey Rakhmanin at
Michael Racy's hangar. When I heard Red Bull was going
to take 2011 off, I thought it would be a great
opportunity for Team USA to hire Sergey as the Unlimited
team coach. After a few team meetings and coordinating
with Sergey, we had a plan. He would travel to the
United States and meet with all the team members to run
training camps with those able to attend. Read

Who's
Goody Thomas?
Unlimited team member profile |
I
grew up in a flying family; I'm a third-generation
aviator. I started as a very young boy building model
airplanes and model rockets. Around age 12, I began
flying radio-controlled airplanes which would later come
into play with flying aerobatics. For as long as I could
remember, my passion for flying has existed. My dad
would take me to air shows as a kid, and I was amazed at
what these men and women could do with the planes. My
inspiration came from the late Leo Loudenslager, who was
a seven-time U.S. National Aerobatic Champion. I wrote
Leo a letter in eighth grade, and he sent me an
autographed picture back. I have it still hanging up
today. Read

Last
month's photo showed an airplane that had been
carefully landed in a tree next to a "Learn to
Fly" sign. It was a real
photo, and the pilot really walked away.
Can you
identify what
this is and where it's located? Really, it does have
something to do with Unlimited competition!

EDITOR'S
NOTE
|
Spotlight
on the World Aerobatic Championships
With the Unlimited World Aerobatic Championships
upon us this year, it seems fitting to dedicate one of
our newsletters to the subject. Each of the team members
dedicates an enormous amount of personal time and
finances to get to the competition. They also depend on
the generous support of the aerobatic community to help
fill in where their own efforts fall short. Read
