Blue
Angels Cut It Close
Commander resigns over incident
Flying
solo aerobatics at an air show is difficult enough -
flying formation aerobatics at low level is what
separates the men from the boys. At an air show in
Lynchburg, Virginia, in May, the Blue Angels got too
close to the ground during a formation loop and had to
cut their show short. As a result, Commander Dave Koss,
who was flight lead, resigned. Many are saying his
resignation reflects a tremendous amount of character
and courage. The following video shows the maneuver in
question. Watch

| SAFETY
|
If
the Blue Angels flight leader resigned over a loop that
got too low, the pilot of the FMA IA 63 trainer jet in
these videos might want to think about a new career.
Both videos are of the same flight - one is shot through
the heads-up display inside the aircraft while the other
was shot by a ground observer. If you watch them a few
times, it's clear to see that it would have been very
easy for this pilot to hit one of the people on the
ground with either the fuselage or the wing hard points.
The fact no one was injured isn't a testament to skill
but rather to sheer dumb luck. They may be interesting
to watch, but the chances of something going wrong were
extremely high. Low level equals high danger.

G-Tolerance
and Dehydration: What You Don't Know Might Hurt You
Chapter 34 in Ohio puts out a great little
newsletter. This month was no exception, and an article
on the effects of dehydration on g-tolerance is a
must-read. Chapter 34 received permission to reprint the
article from the International Council of Air Shows, so see
the story on page 10.

Silent
Pilot - Super Skills
Nicole
Brill is like many aerobatic pilots. She enjoys pushing
the limits of herself and her aircraft by participating
in aerobatic competitions. One thing sets her apart from
other pilots, though; she's deaf. The first video shows
her putting her Super Decathlon through its paces. Watch

| MYSTERY
PHOTO
|
| Last
month's photo wasn't a simple one. That wasn't Phil
Kraft in front of his Kraft Super Fli, but IAC
member Steve Nelson.
Since
low-level fly-bys are a bit of a theme this month, this
month's Mystery Photo continues along that vein. The man
standing casually in the middle of the runway is
literally an inch or so from having his head smashed by
the fuel tank of the airplane above him. Can
you tell what kind of airplane it is?

EDITOR'S
NOTE
|
By
Reggie Paulk,
Editor - In the Loop
Last
month's poll questions revolved around spins (pun
intended), and the response was huge. Nearly 300 people
weighed in with their votes, and it paints a clear
picture for the necessity of spin training with a
competent instructor. Nearly all of the 289 respondents,
or about 96 percent, have practiced spins. This isn't
too much of a shock considering that we're the
International Aerobatic Club, after all. Read
