"Master" Cole, who lost a courageous battle
with pancreatic cancer on July 8, in Louisiana, at the
age of 86. Marion, EAA Lifetime 48 and a founding (No.

| PILOT
IN DUXFORD MID-AIR: 'WE'RE BOTH VERY FORTUNATE' |
A
pilot who parachuted safely to the ground moments before
his World War II warbird crashed to the ground told the
BBC that the mid-air collision with another warbird
"A simple error of judgment" and that
"We're both very fortunate in that we got away with
it with our lives." Rob Davies, who owned the P-51D
Big Beautiful Doll for 15 years, and Jean Baptiste Salis,
pilot and owner of a Douglas A-1D Skyraider, survived
the mid-air last Sunday during the Flying Legends Air
Show at the former RAF Duxford in Cambridgeshire,
England. Count the seconds from initial collision to
canopy departure to open chute—Truly quick thinking. Read

month's photo showed what looked like a maintenance tech
standing in the middle of the runway as a Dassault

fun, who's the pilot the plane belongs to?

EDITOR'S
NOTE
|
By
Reggie Paulk,
Editor - In the Loop
EAA
AirVenture Oshkosh is right around the corner, and we'll
be on the lookout for what's new and exciting coming out
of the show. Hopefully the Dallair FR-100 is just the
tip of the iceberg for the aerobatic community this
year. Last month, we focused a bit on low-level flying
and the risks involved. Our poll questions were focused
on the perception of safety during low-level operations,
and the results are interesting. An overwhelming
majority, 189 of the total 229 respondents, believe
flying low-level is dangerous. When asked if the thrill
outweighed the risks, 178 said that it didn't. Yet,
nearly half of those responding did say they've flown
low-level over unfamiliar terrain - a clear safety
risk.
The
takeaway here is that low-level flying is perceived by
the majority of pilots to be unsafe.
Have
fun out there, be safe, and we'll see you next month!
