IAC Contest FAQs
What is the wind dummy?

Usually the first contestant to fly in each category. This person is usually responsible for flying the low lines. Low lines are flown at the minimum altitude for that category and on the X and Y axes of the box. This is done so the judges will be able to estimate the minimum altitude for that category. Read More

Lessons From Flight 447: A perfectly good airplane the pilots flew into the water.
In June 2009, Air France Flight 447 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean after plummeting 37,000 feet from a pilot-induced stall, killing all 228 souls aboard. In December 1972 Eastern Airlines L-1011 crashed into the Florida Everglades after the pilots became distracted by a malfunctioning gear position indicator light and failed to see the autopilot disconnect. How do these crashes of sophisticated, computerized airliners pertain to aerobatics? Read more

University of North Dakota Aerobatics Highlighted in Video
By John Morrissey
I chiefed the contest at Seward, Nebraska and got to watch the pilots from the University of North Dakota in action. Their team leader and faculty member won Intermediate in their Super Decathlon. The university has created a video to showcase their aerobatic program. I include the link to that video below.
A year ago I invited Michael Lents to come to our annual advanced aerobatic training camps at Ashland, Kansas, and audit the course. I could not provide an aircraft for him but would provide all the handouts, lectures, and a seat on the critique line so he could watch and listen. I then mentioned that if he thought this sort of program would be beneficial to UND's goals that I would invite the UND leadership send two pilots with UND's aircraft to this year's camp. The university accepted and sent Lents—head of their aerobatic program—aerobatic instructor and coach Jonathan Sepulveda, and their Decathlon. You can see both pilots in this video.
I was very pleased with this as it allows our teaching of aerobatics to reach a far greater audience than I will ever reach with our small classes at Ashland. One of the core values of Great Planes Aerobatics is to teach the teachers. For those of you who have been to the USAF Fighter Weapons School, you know exactly what I mean. And why.

By
Reggie Paulk, Editor - In the Loop
Hello aerobatics enthusiasts, and welcome back to In The Loop! I want to personally thank you for your patience with us as we've addressed several organizational changes and challenges. We're ready to move forward and are working to distribute your e-newsletter on a more regular, timely schedule.
It's hard to believe the summer is rapidly drawing to a close and the majority of the competition season has passed. AirVenture was a lot of fun, and we hope to be bringing our members some wonderful airplane and people stories from there in the months ahead.
Congratulations to the U.S. World Advanced Aerobatic Team, and I look forward to seeing you at Nationals.
