Legal Eagle XL Ultralight Introduced
Leonard Milholland has announced the availability of plans for a new enlarged version of his Better Half VW-powered Legal Eagle XL ultralight, especially designed for larger pilots. The Legal Eagle XL isn’t merely an enlarged cockpit version of the original. It’s an entirely new airframe. The original Legal Eagle was limited to a pilot weight of 225 pounds, but the new Legal Eagle XL is rated at 575 pounds gross weight and designed to accommodate a 275-pound pilot. The empty weight of the Legal Eagle XL is 246 pounds.
The Legal Eagle XL is 38 inches longer, 9 inches taller, and the wingspan has increased by 34 inches. The wing chord is 55 inches, the same as the original. Wing area has increased from 107 to 120 square feet, and the new gross weight rating has been verified by static load testing. Some parts, materials, and subassemblies are available through Leonard or secondary suppliers. Numerous examples of the original Legal Eagle have been shown and flown at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh; Leonard is a regular presenter at the Ultralight/Light Plane forum tent. He says a small pilot can still fly the larger Legal Eagle XL by adjusting the rudder pedals and seat during the construction.
