Wathen Foundation Announces Huge Development At Flabob
Flabob Airport, Riverside, CA
March 9, 2006 — New education center, business, and residential areas in the mix The Thomas Wathen Foundation plans a multi-million dollar, three-part development project at historic Flabob Airport, Riverside, California incorporating new educational facilities, an aviation business park, and new aircraft hangars adjoining an aviation-themed residential development. The new educational center will house the aeronautical department of San Bernardino Valley College to Flabob, which plans to relocate on Flabob in 2007. The Wathen Aviation High School, a public charter high school launched last year, will also operate at Flabob.
"The Foundation's goal is to increase its educational outreach while preserving and bringing new vitality to the historic, 80-year-old Flabob airport," said Foundation Founder and EAA President's Council member Thomas Wathen. "These improvements will enable many more people to learn about and participate in aviation, and to become part of the lively Flabob community."
Purchased land adjacent to the airport will house businesses that match Flabob's aviation tradition and historical significance. Most tenants will service, build, restore, or maintain personal aircraft.
The Foundation is also working with a developer to build 75-85 new homes in an aviation-themed residential development near the airport. New hangars will be built mere walking distance from the development, whose residents will get preferential leasing rights. Flabob will thus become the only public-use airport in the Los Angeles basin where aircraft owners can live next to their airplanes.
