Lawrence Meeting With Jacksonville-Area EAA Members
July 12, 2007 — Amidst this week?s continuing ramp-up to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, EAA?s Earl Lawrence was able to break away to visit with the EAA homebuilding community in Jacksonville, Florida, as they prepare for an important city council meeting and discussion of the controversial anti-homebuilding ordinance there.
Lawrence traveled to Florida Thursday, July 12, and planned to meet that night with Milford Shirley, president of EAA Chapter 193, and others to facilitate action strategies for repealing or changing the ordinance. The law presently prohibits storing, building, and maintaining aircraft on residential property within the city limits.
There was an apparent solution reached last year when Shirley and other EAAers seemingly convinced the council that the ordinance should be repealed or significantly changed to allow homebuilt aircraft activities by city residents. Subsequent negotiations resulted in no changes to the ordinance, however, so it remains on the books.
After the most recent election, however, more than half the city council members are new, and local EAAers want to help educate them in hopes of overturning the ordinance. The council is scheduled to meet on July 24.
