Top Ten Ways Ford SYNC™ Redefines In-Car Communications
Developed in collaboration with Microsoft, the incredible new Ford SYNC™ offers owners an easier and more affordable way to connect to their digital media players and most Bluetooth®-enabled mobile phones.

Here are ten ways that Ford SYNC™ redefines in-car communications:

  1. SYNC brings in-car connectivity to everyone – Available in twelve 2008 Ford Motor Company products, SYNC comes standard on Lincoln vehicles and is optional on Ford and Mercury vehicles at an option price of only $395*.
  2. SYNC lets you keep on talking without interruption – It’s designed for voice-activated, hands-free connectivity. There’s no need to hang up in the middle of a cell phone call as you enter your vehicle. Simply start the vehicle and touch the Telephone button on the steering wheel and SYNC will instantly connect to a paired Bluetooth® mobile phone.
  3. You talk, SYNC listens and obeys – SYNC allows you to talk to digital media players such as the Microsoft Zune®. Users are able to browse their music collection on a media player or USB drive by genre, album, artist and song title using simple voice commands, such as “Play Genre Rock,” or “Play Track <song title>.” SYNC also will support Bluetooth® audio for streaming Internet radio stations from Web-connected smart phones and PDAs. In addition, it can access songs from PDAs and phones that are equipped to hold music.
  4. SYNC has no monthly fees – As part of the vehicle purchase, SYNC has no monthly service charges or added fees for phone calls. SYNC uses the devices a person already owns – media players and Bluetooth®-enabled mobile phones, for example – so there are no additional costs.
  5. SYNC can help drivers manage text messages – When paired to a capable phone, Sync notifies the driver of incoming text messages and is able to read them aloud using text-to-speech capability. The system is even smart enough to translate such commonly used text-messaging expressions as “LOL” and “TTYL.” Replies can be selected from a list of predefined responses.
  6. SYNC is compatible with up to 12 unique phones – Once paired using a special, six-digit pass key or “PIN,” SYNC will remember a phone and can quickly connect. Up to 12 phones can be paired with a SYNC-equipped vehicle (with one connected at any given time).
  7. SYNC can be personalized, just like your mobile phone – When paired to a supported phone, SYNC will play personal ring tones. If you’ve configured unique ring tones to identify specific callers, SYNC will automatically play those as well.
  8. SYNC is multilingual – SYNC speaks three languages – more than most of us! It’s fluent in English, Canadian French and North American Spanish.
  9. SYNC is a factory-installed option – From the start, SYNC has been developed as an integrated part of the vehicle design.
  10. SYNC is a software solution, not a hardware solution – SYNC is an onboard computer, with 256 megabyte flash memory and a 400 MHz microprocessor, loaded with software that seamlessly integrates the vehicle with today’s popular portable electronic devices. Since it is a software-based system, it is updatable and should be able to support the devices and services of tomorrow. Unlike some systems, SYNC won’t become obsolete in a few years.

* MSRP excludes taxes.

Ford Sets Land Speed Record with Ford Fusion Hydrogen 999 Fuel Cell Racecar
Ford Motor Company made history on August 16, 2007 by becoming the world’s first automaker to set a land speed record for a production-based fuel-cell-powered car – the Ford Fusion Hydrogen 999. The world’s first production-based hydrogen fuel cell racecar reached a top speed of just over 207 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Wendover, Utah.

The Fusion Hydrogen 999 is Ford’s latest environmental innovation, another step on the road toward commercially viable hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. It was built in collaboration with Ballard Power Systems, Roush and Ohio State University, and is one of two vehicles demonstrating the potential of fuel cell technology.

“We established this project to advance fuel-cell-powered vehicles and to do what has never been done before, and we did it,” said Gerhard Schmidt, Vice President, Research and Advanced Engineering for Ford Motor Company.

Schmidt said Ford’s historic run at Bonneville will further expand the company's technological horizons with fuel-cell-powered vehicles, because the use of hydrogen as a fuel could someday play a key role in meeting the energy needs of the transportation sector.

Land Rover’s Land_e Technologies Help Reduce Fuel Consumption and Harmful Emissions
Land Rover is showcasing a catalog of innovative technologies called “Land_e,” which is designed to reduce both fuel consumption and harmful tailpipe emissions while helping improve the outstanding capability of Land Rover’s SUV vehicles.

These technologies are designed to contribute to a potential improvement in fuel economy – of up to one third over a current vehicle of similar size and performance. And many of the technologies will be available on Land Rover production models in the next few years.

While adhering to Land Rover’s core abilities as versatile, all-terrain vehicles, Land_e technologies target an improvement in the combined fuel economy figure for a compact SUV of up to one third. That in turn could significantly reduce harmful tailpipe emissions.

Ford Donates, Employees Volunteer
Ford Motor Company began as a philanthropic and community-focused company in the early days of Henry Ford and continues to make an impact today.

For example, Ford recently donated $50,000 to Habitat for Humanity and America's Promise Alliance, the group founded by General Colin Powell to help at-risk children.

Ford’s 8,700 employees participate in “Model Team” volunteer projects, such as building houses in Detroit and cleaning parks in California. In September, Ford finished its 2007 “Global Week of Caring” in which volunteers worked on projects on six continents.

“In a day and age when we don't have the financial resources we've had in the past, we've found if we combine the two (donating and volunteering), we can contribute to communities in a way that's even more powerful,” said Jim Vella, President of Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services.

Ford's aim is to have volunteers work on 100 projects by October 2008, the 100th anniversary of the Model T. “The goal is really for our employees to feel good," Chairman of Ford Motor Company Bill Ford said. "It's never been directly about selling vehicles.”
