EAA Member Village - A Great Place to Meet
Phil Riter was a happy flightline volunteer this morning when he told us, "They've given us more real estate this morning!" As the Sun 'n Fun grounds have continued to dry, the flightline operations folks have been doing their best to free up parking space for showplanes. Above, Flightline Operations Co-Chairman Don McLendon drives a huge roller to smooth out the field in preparation for parking more airplanes.
Who wouldn't like a little ice cream to go with a Florida fly-in? Mike Starnes of Kissimmee, Florida drives this vintage 1949 Cushman ice cream cooler on the Sun 'n Fun grounds, and hand scoops ice cream into waffle cones.
April 9, 2008 — On Wednesday, EAA Day at the Sun 'n Fun Fly-In, EAA members got a chance to visit with various EAA staffers at EAA Member Village. My turn was at lunchtime, so I spent an enjoyable hour chatting with several members of EAA's Vintage Aircraft Association. They were curious about plans for this year's AirVenture Oshkosh, as well as VAA's plans for future activities.
VAA members Jim Roberts, Dick Lawrence, and Chip Davis discussed with me their views regarding type club parking at AirVenture - they're all for it - and would like to see more of it done in the Vintage parking area. They also put forth a story idea for Vintage Airplane magazine concerning the organization of the FAA, saying how the various departments of the agency relate to VAA members would be helpful as they do their best to keep their aircraft flying.
Chip also asked about the demographics of the typical VAA member, and we agreed that while much of that information had been published in an article in Vintage Airplane, it would be interesting to members to post it as well on the Vintage website, www.vintageaircraft.org. We intend to do so as soon as possible.
They also each pointed out it that was fun to put a face to my name; it's always great to spend time with members face-to-face to learn first hand what their concerns are. While I speak with members every day on the phone, it was wonderful to chat with them in person.
We'll see you at AirVenture!
