Norris Named EAA Homebuilder Community Leader
July 23, 2008 — EAA has named Joe Norris Homebuilders’ Community Manager, or “Homebuilding “Czar.” Norris, an experienced homebuilder, built a Sonerai II and is currently building a replica of the Piper P-2, plus is involved in a group project building a Sonex. Norris volunteers as an EAA Technical Counselor and Flight Advisor, is an experienced pilot and CFI, and is also authorized by the FAA as a Designated Airworthiness Representative to perform final inspections on homebuilts. Inspired by building his own aircraft, he went on to earn his Airframe and Powerplant certificate with Inspection Authorization.
“Joe not only has the background in homebuilding, but he has the passion as well,” said Charlie Becker, director of member programs. “Since becoming an amateur-built DAR, Joe has conducted 180 airworthiness inspections for EAA members. All this was done on his own time as a volunteer at no cost to the member. That shows his commitment to helping his fellow homebuilders. I couldn’t imagine a better person to serve as Homebuilder’s ‘Czar.’”
Norris will be responsible for planning, implementing, and day-to-day management of EAA homebuilder programs. This includes management of EAA’s Technical Counselor and Flight Advisor programs as well as developing new programs and services for homebuilders; working on homebuilt issues with EAA Government and Industry Relations staff; and develop magazine and website content with EAA Publications. In that role, Norris will serve as an active participant and leader in developing EAA’s online homebuilding resources.
“EAA has been a big part of my life for over 30 years,” Norris said. “I believe in EAA’s culture of members helping members, and I have benefited from that culture on countless occasions. I appreciate the opportunity to serve in this new position and I look forward to helping EAA members with their homebuilt issues and concerns.”
Many EAAers already know Norris as “the answer man” as he has been an EAA Senior Aviation Specialist since October 2001. In that role, Norris fielded technical aviation questions from members and conducted numerous homebuilding forums at EAA AirVenture-Oshkosh. Before becoming an EAA staff member, he was a long-time volunteer at AirVenture Oshkosh and held many different officer positions in EAA chapters 706 and 640. He is also a member of EAA chapter 252. In addition, Norris is an EAA Vintage Aircraft Association member and was a founding member of EAA’s Homebuilt Aircraft Council.
Norris is also a featured demonstrator in EAA’s Hints for Homebuilders, a popular online series of video tips for builders (watch video), plus contributes to EAA’s weekly e-Hotline newsletter’s Question of the Week.
