Imagine being able to make your daily commute gas-free without compromising power and performance. Introducing a groundbreaking innovation in sustainable transportation — the Volvo ReCharge Concept. The ReCharge Concept is a plug-in hybrid with individual electric wheel motors and batteries that can be recharged via a regular electrical outlet for maximum environmental benefit. Recharging allows the car to be driven 60 miles on battery power alone before the four-cylinder Flexifuel engine is needed to power the car and recharge the battery. Thanks to the excellent electrical range from a fuel consumption angle, the Volvo ReCharge Concept is as kind to the environment as it is to your wallet. When driving on electric power only, operating costs are expected to be about 80 percent lower than that of a comparable petrol-powered car. When driving beyond the 60-mile battery range, fuel consumption may vary from 0 to 1.5 gallons per 60 miles depending on the distance driven using the engine. The ReCharge is ideal for commuters who travel less than 60 miles between home and workplace. For these drivers, the ReCharge can cover the entire round trip on electric power alone, making carbon emissions minimal. Even when traveling on longer commutes, the ReCharge produces extraordinary fuel economy. For instance, a 90-mile drive starting with a full charge will require less than a gallon of fuel, giving the car an effective fuel economy of 1.91/124 mpg! Compared to the very best hybrid vehicles available on the market today, the Volvo ReCharge should have about 66 percent lower emissions of carbon dioxide. Emissions may be even lower than that impressive number if most of the electricity in the intended markets comes from CO2-friendly sources such as biogas, hydropower and nuclear power.
