House GA Caucus Hears From GA Organizations

May 21, 2009 — Today, EAA and other general aviation organizations briefed the newly formed House General Aviation Caucus about the importance of general aviation and highlighted issues of concern such as user fees, congressional oversight of FAA, air traffic modernization, and the severe impact of TSA security regulations and directives on GA.

More than 50 attended the session including co-chairs Ehlers (R-MI) and Boyd (D-FL), Representatives Graves (R-MO), Boswell (D-IA), Coble (R-NC), Tiahrt (R-KS), Moran (R-KS), Salazar (D-CO) and Cohen (D-TN), various staff members of the other caucus members, and representatives from AOPA, NBAA, NATA and GAMA.  The principals from these organizations presented the importance of general aviation to the national economy and fabric of the nation as well as issues of concern and interest to this newly established general aviation caucus.

Doug Macnair, EAA vice president of government relations, presented on the members behalf.  He spoke particularly to sport and recreational aviation highlighting EAA’s 1000 local chapters and their importance in the home districts of nearly every congressman, indicating that EAA members vote at a rate more than four times that of the American public.  As an example of the devotion, care and quality of people and activities surrounding this community of enthusiasts, he also shared the culture of respect, cleanliness and ingenuity that is embodied at AirVenture Oshkosh each year.  Macnair invited the Members and staff to visit AirVenture this summer and witness for themselves what surely stands out as a microcosm of the very best of America and its people.  As a result, EAA is working with the Caucus leadership and the Aviation Subcommittee to bring members of this group to Oshkosh again this year.

“We represent and promote aviation; EAA seeks to make aviation accessible to anyone interested in pursuing their dreams of flight. Our members make general aviation part of their lives; they are average American citizens, like you and me, who choose to devote their discretionary income to pursuing their interest in flight,” said Macnair.  “It’s an expression of who they are, to each of them it’s more than a hobby, it’s a lifestyle, it’s their passion.”
