Skiles to Speak at EAA Wright Memorial Banquet
November 12, 2009 — Jeff Skiles, Young Eagles co-chairman and First Officer of US Airways Flight 1549, will be the keynote speaker at EAA’s 7th Annual Wright Brothers Memorial Banquet scheduled for Friday, December 18, at the EAA AirVenture Museum’s Eagle Hangar in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The dinner celebrates the 106th anniversary of Orville and Wilbur Wright’s first successful powered flight on December 17, 1903.
Skiles, of Oregon, Wisconsin, had his own noteworthy flight on January 15, 2009, when he and fellow Young Eagles co-chairman Capt. Sully Sullenberger safely guided an Airbus A320 to a successful emergency ditching in the Hudson River after it lost power in both engines due to a bird strike. The famous flight crew’s calm, decisive action during the emergency spared 155 souls that day. Skiles will talk about the flight and impart lessons learned.
Skiles first attended the EAA Fly-In and Convention with his parents, who are also pilots, when it was held in Rockford, Illinois, in the 1960s.
