Woman Ordered to Give Boss Her RV-9A
February 18, 2010 — A Kansas City dentist recently received an RV-9A as restitution for a theft by one of his employees. A Federal court sentenced Sandra Brandes to a 15-month prison term after she was convicted of embezzling more than $77,000 from the dental practice of Dr. J. Daniel Fleming. According to a report by The Ottawa Herald, Brandes used some of the money to buy an RV kit and built the airplane with her husband Matthew Brandes. In 2006, The Ottawa Herald had even published a feature on the couple and their efforts to build the aircraft.
Prosecutors in the case sought the unusual compensation judgment to maximize the amount of money Fleming would receive in return. The court ordered Brandes to transfer the title of the aircraft to Fleming. The RV-9A is estimated at a value of close to $80,000. The aircraft is not yet registered, but N523RV is listed in the FAA aircraft registry as reserved by Mathew Brandes. No word yet on whether Doctor Fleming is looking to begin flight training.
