FAA Safety Bulletin for Homebuilts with Certain Stall Characteristics

March 26, 2010 — The FAA has released a safety bulletin regarding amateur-built airplanes operating under an experimental airworthiness certificate and possessing particular stall characteristics, which may include high wing loading and stall speeds in excess of 61 knots.

While the FAA has seen a downward trend in accidents involving these aircraft, the agency is recommending steps that builders and pilots of these aircraft can take to prepare the aircraft and pilots for safe operation.

Aircraft affected by this safety bulletin include some models of Lancairs and others that may have high wing loading characteristics and high stall speeds.
