EAA 541ís Barnstormers Air Festival on ILTFD
May13, 2010 — In January this year, EAA Chapter 541 in Lake Charles, Louisiana decided to put together an aviation event that would tie-in with International Learn to Fly Day. Their efforts will come to pass this weekend: the Barnstormer’s Air Festival, scheduled for Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at the Jennings Airport.
Included in the day’s festivities is an assortment of aviation activities - homebuilt, production aircraft, light-sport aircraft, ultralights and warbirds static displays; aviation vendors; a children’s area sponsored by the Louisiana DOT; Young Eagles flights, and more. There’s also a stage with live entertainment, food vendors, and a significant show of support from the local community.
Chapter President Lenora Krielow even received a grant from the local parish tourist commission to help fund the event. The Jennings mayor issued a proclamation designating May 15 as Learn to Fly Day. The local newspaper also plans to preview the event this week with a front-page story.
And dozens of volunteers from within the chapter and the community will work at the event, including Civil Air Patrol Cadets who will help park arriving aircraft.
“We wanted to hold not just a Learn to Fly event or a Young Eagles event, but an aviation festival,” Krielow said. “We’ve been able to get many people working together to support it.”
The Barnstormers Air Festival is also a part of the Louisiana Fly-In Series, which should draw a number of aircraft flying in from around the state, Krielow said.
