FAA Clears FIFI for Flight
July 8, 2010 — The FAA issued an Airworthiness Certificate for the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) B-29 Superfortress FIFI on Tuesday, July 6, clearing the way for Phase I flight-testing to begin this Friday afternoon, July 9, according to the CAF. Phase I test flights will continue through Saturday, July 10.
During these test flights - the first in four years for the aircraft - B-29 crewmembers will be required to depart Midland International Airport for unpopulated areas, the CAF explained. Upon returning from the flights, the crew will need to dismantle areas of the aircraft in order to review performance and safety.
Next Monday, July 12, the aircraft will be in flight for crew training and the CAF invites the community to join in celebrating FIFI’s return to flight. During these training exercises the B-29 crew will be performing “touch-and-gos” at Midland International Airport. (Crew training schedule subject to change based on the successful completion of Phase I Flight-Testing or inclement weather.) For more information, visit the CAF website.
