BuildAPlane Continues AirVenture Teachers Day Sponsorship

April 28, 2011 — BuildAPlane, in cooperation with EAA and the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA), will sponsor Teacher’s Day at AirVenture 2011 for the third consecutive year. The special day, Tuesday, July 26, is designed to assist educators in bringing aviation into classrooms. Teachers at all grade levels from across the United States are invited to participate at no charge.

“We are amazed by how many great opportunities are out there to use aviation to engage and motivate kids to learn,” said Lyn Freeman, BuildAPlane president. “Today’s students respond to real world applications and aviation really captures their attention.”

Teacher’s Day sessions will offer teachers materials from private industry, the federal government, and aviation organizations. Participants can attend a number of hands-on presentations and to speak directly to program specialists. A wide variety of free, take-home materials will be available for all attendees.

Participants can also obtain one graduate credit through Viterbo University, La Crosse, Wisconsin. Lunch and a one-day admission to AirVenture are also provided for each teacher who completes the course.

Katrina Bradshaw, BuildAPlane’s executive director, noted “Last year, a group of students and teachers involved in a BuildAPlane project came all the way from several native Alaskan villages that are hundreds of miles from the nearest road. If you want to see just how committed to aviation America’s educators can be, come to Teacher’s Day at AirVenture!”

Ryan Walker, an Alaska teacher who led a recent aircraft building project at Chevak High School in Alaska, attended in 2010 and plans to participate in Teacher Day 2011. The aircraft - a RANS S-6s Coyote - will be on display.

Organizations presenting material include the Department of Energy, FAA, National Air and Space Museum, AOPA, NASA, EAA, GAMA, and others. Registration for the free event is available at www.BuildAPlane.org. Space is limited. For more information contact BuildAPlane at 804-843-3321.
