May 19, 2011 — Jeff Skiles, co-chairman of the EAA Young Eagles program, was the guest speaker at EAA Chapter 838 in Racine Wisconsin last Friday, May 13, at a fundraiser for the chapter’s youth programs. In addition to an active Young Eagles and Aviation Explorer program, Chapter 838 has the Young Aviators program, which hosts a weeklong aviation camp each August for youths age 13-18.
On Friday, Skiles met with chapter members and guests at a private reception before delivering a multimedia presentation about his role in guiding US Airways Flight 1549, the Miracle on the Hudson, to a safe ditching in January 2009 on the Hudson River in New York. Afterward he answered questions from the audience and posed for pictures with members.
Skiles was also going to fly Young Eagles the following day at the chapter’s monthly rally, but that was weathered out. He offered to return to Racine next weekend, May 28, and fly Young Eagles during EAA’s Ford Tri-Motor visit. The Memorial Day weekend event includes rides on the EAA Ford Tri-Motor, the chapter’s famous pancake breakfast on Saturday and Sunday morning, and a Young Eagles rally Saturday morning from 9-12.
