User-Fee Talk Entering Budget Debate?
Line item causes GA groups concern
July 14, 2011 –Initial details emerging from the federal budget talks between Congressional Republicans and President Obama include a $27 billion line item that sounds suspiciously like a plan for GA user fees. Among the plans being debated is one from a group led by Vice President Joe Biden. In a list of what’s called “Other Mandatories” is a line stating “$27b PBGC/Aviation/FAA Fees.”
EAA and other GA organizations are digging for more details on what that item contains as well as any other discussion items that may have an impact on aviators, which continues a worrisome trend of Administration proposals that would hinder GA activity and growth. The user-fee concept has been raised by several Administrations over the past 25 years, but has been excluded from final Congressional budget and reauthorization bills.
We will keep you updated on this and other news that may come from the budget and debt ceiling negotiations this month.
