Take User Fee Opposition Right to the Top

White House petition allows you to support GA

September 26, 2011 – A newly established petition process on the White House website designed to encourage direct citizen input is enabling you to voice your opposition to GA user fees directly to the Obama Administration.

Any citizen or pilot can sign the petition titled “Take Aviation User Fees Off The Table” at “We The People” by creating a free website account and joining the thousands who have already signed. As of Thursday afternoon, more than 6,100 people had signed the petition and the count continues to rise steadily as word of the petition spreads throughout the GA community.

The petition has therefore exceeded the 5,000 signatures within 30 days threshold (October, 23, 2011) for White House response and further consideration.. EAA is strongly encouraging members to take a few minutes to log on and voice their opposition to the user fee proposal.

The petition was initiated by an Iowa pilot in opposition to the Administration’s proposal to establish a new mandatory surcharge for air traffic services. This proposal would create a $100 per flight fee, payable to the FAA, by aviation operators who fly in controlled airspace.

The petition states, “By using an existing system of revenue generation [fuel taxes], the Administration can put more of the revenue collected towards the operation of the air traffic control system, thus improving safety for the system overall.”

EAA remains staunchly opposed to user fees; it has maintained its support for the current GA fuel tax as the most equitable and efficient way to fund the aviation system and is working aggressively with other aviation organizations to counter the threat on Capitol Hill.

“The policy decisions of this administration are greatly influenced by direct input from citizens through online and social media,” said Doug Macnair, EAA vice president of government relations. “This petition is an excellent opportunity to let the White House know of the strong opposition to user fees in the GA community.”
