Embraer Phenom 100 Ordered for Barrington Irving's Flying Classroom
October 13, 2011 – Embraer and entrepreneur/philanthropist Fabio Alexander will provide a Phenom 100 jet for use by Experience Aviation to encourage students to pursue education in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Experience Aviation, founded by world record-setting pilot Barrington Irving, will use the jet as a flying classroom in a new program called “Journey for Knowledge.” The jet order was announced this week at NBAA2011 in Las Vegas.
In addition to traditional STEM subjects, students will also learn about global history, geography, weather, and culture as Irving flies around the world with the aircraft. In 2007, a then-23-year-old Irving became the youngest person - and the first African American pilot - to fly solo around the world in a single-engine airplane. Using the Phenom 100, Irving will communicate with thousands of students via live video feed during his flights, and he plans to make another around-the-world trip in 2013. His goal is to bring a live 41,000-foot MSL classroom to more than 1 million students throughout the United States and the world.
Embraer’s commitment to education and involvement with Experience Aviation will include continuing support for Irving’s flying classroom. “This is a great example of how business aircraft are used to advance our society and enhance quality of life around the world,” said Ernest Edwards, president of Embraer Executive Jets. “Thanks to the generosity and commitment of people like Fabio, these aircraft are more than business tools, and we are pleased that we can play a direct role in assisting Fabio and Experience Aviation. They can inspire and excite our emerging generations and motivate them to pursue a future in STEM disciplines.”
