December 1, 2011 – EAA Experimenter editor Pat Panzera is a regular viewer of the Discovery Channel program American Chopper, and when a Titan T-51 aircraft appeared in the background near the end of last week’s episode it didn’t escape his gaze. The aircraft, shown during the preview for the episode set to air on Monday, December 5, is in fact Unusual Attitudes, a 3/4-scale replica P-51 Mustang owned by Ron Dalin, of Jefferson, Ohio. Panzera did some poking around and found out what the airplane was doing there.
“The word I got was that (Unusual Attitudes) is featured in the program as the inspiration for Paul (Teutul) Jr.'s custom motorcycle build, a P-51 bike,” Panzera discovered.
Some further digging revealed that the plane had been trailered from the local airport to the workshop and headquarters of Paul Jr. Designs in Rock Tavern, New York, with police escort on closed roads.
What’s more, Panzera wrote in an e-mail, “When they were through with the plane's portion of the show, Titan Aircraft's Bill Koleno was allowed to taxi from the shop, out to the street, and with a highway patrol escort, FAA blessings, and with reluctant trepidation from the Department of Transportation, he departed from a portion of the road just past any wires, and was tail-up as he motored through a blocked intersection.”
There's no knowing how much of the aerial operations will be aired on the show, but the plane itself in Paul's shop should be prominently displayed.
The show is slated to debut on Monday, December 5, at 9 p.m. ET/PT (8 p.m. CT), highlighting the three-way "build-off" between Paul Jr., his father Paul Teutul Sr., and legendary California chopper builder Jesse James. On the following show, scheduled to air the next day (Tuesday, December 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT (8 p.m. CT), all three bikes will be unveiled during the live broadcast and viewers will be invited to vote for their favorite.
