Building a Backcountry Flier

Wayne Mackey's Stolquest SQ2
Larry Mayer
In early August 2007, Wayne Mackey Jr. advanced the throttle on his new Stolquest SQ2 and rolled less than 200 feet before climbing into the Montana sky. After experimenting for 30 years
and building, or rebuilding, more than 80 Cubtype airplanes, Wayne was finally putting all of his short takeoff and landing ideas to the test.

Perfect Fit
Bonding with a Tiger Moth
Jim Busha
Some people wouldn’t give a wooden nickel
for an airplane that was built 40, 50, or even
70 years ago. Thankfully, some pilots have not
forgotten the original attributes of these tried
and true workhorses and have given them new
life and meaning.

Pure Flight
Sailplanes offer sport fliers unique opportunities
Amy Laboda
Nothing irks me more than cruising through late
afternoon thermals in my powered plane and
seeing buzzards circling weightlessly thousands
of feet above me. They must laugh at my futile
efforts to eke a few knots of speed or a couple
of hundred feet of altitude out of the free ride
they use to stay airborne for hours.

Going Propless
How I added a glider rating
John S. Craparo
I began flying in a Beech Sundowner and then moved to an Ercoupe—a two-control model with no rudder pedals. I thought gliders would give me the opportunity to become proficient in
flying three-axis controls again while opening up new avenues of flight.

44 Somebody Else’s Homebuilt
Buy someone else’s homebuilt? Are you crazy?
Tony Rizzo
I thought I knew nearly everything I needed
to know about homebuilts. What I was sure
of was that homebuilts were inherently
dangerous and that getting into a homebuilt
I did not build myself was nothing short of
suicidal.
