This year’s improvements in the Warbird area at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh were great and many, and perhaps the greatest of these was the addition of Scotts Warbird Alley. Dignitaries, veterans, and the legendary aircraft they flew were all present. If you were there, it was a fantastic venue. Think AeroShell Square for Warbirds. We’ve picked out some pictures showing just some of the great events happening in the alley, and we hope you’ll make plans to be there next year. In the words of Harold Cannon’s 10-year-old daughter, “This place rocks!”
Through EAA Warbirds of America’s partnership with ScottsMiracle-Gro, visitors to AirVenture 2010 saw major improvements in the Warbird area. A new pad expansion, landscaping, and Veterans Memorial are all part of the scene. The venue hosts the Warbirds in Review presentations and serves as a display case for some of the most historically significant aircraft in attendance at AirVenture. This year included an A6M2 Zero, a Seafire, and the P-38 Glacier Girl. You just don’t see a collection like that anywhere outside the Smithsonian! Rounding out the display were a C-47, B-17, P-51 Mustangs, and an F-86, among others. The excitement in the crowds was great, and the size of the crowds in the Warbird area was greater.
Speakers at the dedication included Rick Siegfried, EAA Warbirds of America president; Tom Poberezny, EAA president and AirVenture chairman; and Jim Hagedorn, ScottsMiracle-Gro Company chairman and chief executive officer. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano was a surprise speaker, and our own Warbirds of America Board Member Congressman Sam Graves (R-Missouri) spoke as well.
Warbirds in Review used this new venue daily throughout AirVenture to host what might be considered record-breaking crowds. Special thanks go to Jim Hagedorn, ScottsMiracle-Gro, and Warbirds Board Member Connie Bowlin for the dedication and hard work that made this showcase possible.
