Elkhart Warbird Gathering - 2013

Mark your calendar on October 4 to 6 for this year's Warbird Gathering at Elkhart, Indiana, which looks to be a fun-filled weekend. This year's theme features Mike Gillian's Wildcat and the 75th anniversary of the North American T-6 Texan.

Friday, October 4, is arrival day and fun flying. Activities planned for Saturday, October 5, include local fun formation and solo flying, waivered airspace for the aerial demonstrations, strafing flour bomb runs, and four-ship formation contests by aircraft class. Arrive early for fun, flying, formation and team selection, and practice, but most importantly for enjoying good fellowship.

Special hotel rates are available at the following motels: Quality Inn & Suites, 574-264-0404, approximately $45; Baymont Inn and Suites (formerly Jameson Inn), 800-337-0550, approximately $60; or Best Western, 574-262-8761. Tell them you are with the Elkhart Warbird Gathering.

They will also have a few RV dealer demo campers for rent on the field with hot showers in the EWE Headquarters Hangar next to the campers. Enterprise rental cars are available in Elkhart; call 574-266-1862. Other major rental companies are also available at KSBN (15 miles away). Check AirNav at www.AirNav.com/airports for contact numbers.

On Saturday, October 5, activities will be held at EKM. The EAA breakfast starts at 7 a.m., followed by a 9:30 a.m. briefing for general flight rules and will include formation team rules, flour bombing strafing run rules, and waivered airspace rules. Safety being our major concern, they are planning on having Rhonda Tesch and Bill Gius from OSH Warbird Flightline again this year and helpers from the local EAA Chapter 132 to manage our ramp.

A picnic lunch buffet sponsored by the FWA and AZO QB's will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and includes homemade ice cream and pies. Formation team competition will begin approximately at 11:30 a.m., aerial demos at 1:30 p.m., and flour bomb strafing runs at 2 p.m. Capping the day's activities will be the 7 p.m. awards banquet at Christiana Creek Country Club. You don't want to miss the banquet for fun, jokes, egos, and good fellows poking fun at the day's activities.

On Sunday there's a complimentary brunch fly-out 31 miles northwest to Watervliet, Michigan (40C), at noon. Briefing will be at 10 a.m. This is a great wide grass field with tremendous local support, and you don't want to miss the opportunity to take your formation team over for a great brunch.

The FBO will provide special fuel pricing. Professional photographers will be on hand to record all the local action with a great many pictures and video taken for our DVD production.

E-mail Chuck Marshall at cmarshall@marshallpoe.com with your RSVP. He will send you an e-mail packet for advanced registration filled with additional briefing notes and flight briefing cards with red, white, and blue flight zone layouts.
