| Flying
Is Fun in Any Language |
| Flying
a little bit of history is always special and sometimes a
little funny, too. A few weeks ago, an old friend called and
asked if he could let a couple of kids come out to the
hangar and look around. Any excuse to go to the airport
seems like a good one to me, so no was never considered. In
fact, I seldom miss an opportunity to take a kid flying.
What |
 |
| made
these kids special, he went on, was their Sunday morning
habit of dragging Mom and Dad out of bed to go airplane
spotting. He should have added that both of these boys are
from Japan and speak very little English. Read

Runway Phraseology: Line Up and Wait |
| On
September 30, air traffic controllers began using the phrase
"line up and wait" to replace "taxi into
position and hold." The Federal Aviation Administration
made the change to bring U.S. procedures in line with
International Civil Aviation Organization methods. The
"line up and wait" direction is meant to position
aircraft for imminent departure, but does not authorize an
aircraft to take off. It also cannot be issued if an
aircraft has been cleared to land on the same runway.
The FAA
reminds pilots not to cross or take off from any runway
unless they have been specifically instructed to do so. You
can read
the FAA directive here. |

FW-190 Nears First Flight |
Rescued
from Russian forest
The BMW 801 engine of the Flying Heritage Collection's (FHC)
Fw-190A-5/U3 restoration project recently had its first run
by Vintage V12s in Tehachapi, California, according to a
report on the Meier Motors website. Although official |
 |
| news
regarding the project has been hard to come by, EAA learned
that FHC plans to fly the 190 for the public at Paine Field
in time for its "Luftwaffe Day" during the 2011
May-September flying season next year. When complete, this
will be the only airworthy original Focke-Wulf 190 in the
world, according to the Meier Motors website. See

Rescue |
| Ever
wonder who's restoring what? Taigh Ramey and Vintage
Aircraft have been up to a lot. This isn't exactly a Mustang
in a barn, more like a Harpoon in a field. The Lockheed
PV-2D Harpoon, one of 35 D model Harpoons built, was on land
that had been sold, and the aircraft needed to go as the new
land owners didn't like old |

like we do. The old warbird had been sitting since 1994 and
had become the home to many different creatures over the
years. She was buried in the ground past her axles, and the
belly tank was resting squarely on the ground - a sad sight
indeed. But the derelict would eventually become a cloud
dancer once again. Read

Last Flight |
Printed
with permission from The Paper
About 20 years ago during a large warbird gathering in
Genesee, New York, the crew of a restored Lockheed Harpoon
met a Navy veteran who had flown the aircraft in World War
II. His sons brought him to the show in an effort to cheer
him up due to a recent diagnosis of terminal cancer. |
 |
| The
crew soon offered the veteran a seat on a photo flight
scheduled for the next day. The next morning when the man
showed up for the flight, it soon became apparent how
valuable this additional crew member would be. Read

Provide Info on This Piece of Equipment |
| An
interesting set of photos was recently sent to the EAA
Warbirds of America home office. The sender has been in
possession of an old Air Force gunsight computer for a few
years and is asking which aircraft used this piece of
equipment. After some initial research, nothing turned up.
Then we decided to post the photos in Briefing |

you, our readers, could help. Read

Time Inspector Policy Change Raises Alarms
Public comments on proposal welcomed through December 6 |
| EAA
and the Vintage Aircraft Association this week quickly moved
for FAA clarification on a policy proposal that is causing
confusion among maintenance professionals and
owner/operators who rely on a part-time Airplane and
Powerplant (A&P) mechanic with an Inspection
Authorization. A number of members have contacted EAA and
two of its special interest divisions, the Vintage Aircraft
Association (VAA) and EAA Warbirds of America, fearing that the
proposal could mean the end of Inspection Authorizations for
part-time mechanics. Read

Thank You to Our Veterans |
| On
Veterans Day, we remember the sacrifices made by the brave
men and women while defending freedom all over the world.
Whether they served at times of war or times of peace, we
are forever grateful to those who put their lives on the
line while serving their country. Those of us who enjoy the
freedom of flight know that freedom comes at a cost - a cost
borne by those who have served in uniform. Read

Years of Naval Aviation: You're All Invited to the Party |
| This
100th year of Naval Aviation will be filled with
celebration, not the least of which will be a special
emphasis at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2011. The U.S. Navy is
kicking things off with its Centennial of Naval Aviation
Aerial Review on February 12, 2011, in San Diego,
California. If you're a warbird owner with a Navy aircraft,
Uncle Sam wants you. I think the rest of us would have a
blast just being there. Read

International Air Show 2010 |
| For
decades, Canada was known for great air shows. In the ’80s
and ’90s, the London Air Show in Ontario was famous for
fantastic participants. Remember, for instance, the 1989
London Air Show with the attendance of 25F-4 Phantoms from
various forces and units. Unfortunately,
due
to financial concerns the London Air Show & Balloon
Festival hasn’t taken place from 2002 on. Fortunately,
Windsor Airport, close to Detroit, Michigan, looks to be a
good alternative. Here the Windsor International Air Show,
also known as “The Sounds of Freedom II,” was held
Saturday and Sunday, August 21 and 22, 2010. Pieter M.
Groenendijk takes us there with great pictures of the
action. Read

Recovered From Russian Lake After Six Decades |
| A
Bell P-39Q Airacobra, built in a western New York state
factory in 1943, has returned home after resting at the
bottom of a Russian lake since 1944. This particular
aircraft was sent to the Soviet Union under the United
States' Lend-Lease program, which propped up |

| Allied
forces with war materiel before and after the U.S. entered
World War II. Miss Lend-Lease, as it has been named, served
in a frontline Soviet Air Force squadron along the border
with Finland. The discovery is rare since remains of the
pilot along with key artifacts, found with the aircraft,
have provided insights into the mystery of why the aircraft
suddenly broke formation as the squadron repositioned to an
airfield closer to the front 66 years ago. Read

Mission to BMT 2010 Fly-In |
| Every
October, a well-kept secret fly-in occurs at the home of a
Tennessee aircraft and military vehicle collector, who just
happens to be a world-champion barbecue expert as well.
Warbirds, motorhomes, tents, and trailers all convene at an
immaculate grass strip for an aviation happening that has no
crowds, just pilots, family, and friends. It's as close to
heaven as most of us will |
 |
| get
this side of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. There's a bit of
business conducted (a brief meeting for Tennessee-based
Warbirds of America Squadron 1), but a good time is the
order of the day. For a little taste of southern aviation
hospitality, continue on, as Russ McDonald (Yankee aerial
invader), lets us know how the boys in Tennessee define fun.
