Liberty Belle Destroyed After Emergency Landing |
| The
B-17 Liberty Belle owned by the Liberty Foundation
was forced to make an emergency landing in a field southeast
of the Aurora, Illinois, Municipal Airport at about 9:30
a.m. CDT on June 13 when an in-flight fire occurred shortly |

after takeoff. All seven people on board the nonrevenue
flight escaped the aircraft, but the airplane was destroyed
when it became engulfed in flames. One person on the plane
was treated for a minor head wound at Rush-Copley Medical
Center in Aurora and released. Read

Progress
Report No. 38, May 2011
Follow along with the effort to restore a Halifax bomber
"north of the border." The Halifax was a
four-engine Royal Canadian Air Force workhorse. Looking a
bit like a four-engine B-25 taildragger, the original design
called for two engines. More than 2,000 of the Mk III model

month is Part 2 of the recollections of the late Walter J.
Nachtwey, a B-17 pilot who was eventually shot down over
Germany and spent nearly two years in Stalag Luft III, a
German prisoner of war camp made famous by the film The Great Escape. |

flight training in early 1943
and was flying combat missions out of England by June. Now,
as his bombardment group was flying their third mission
things started to unravel, right after the bomb run, just

the Battleship North Carolina’s Kingfisher plane pilots,
Commander Almon P. Oliver, U.S. Navy (Retired), came back to
the veteran vessel on April 26, 2011, |

to reflect. This is
the account of the only rescue of a downed U.S. aviator from
the Japanese homeland.

located off the English coast after 70 years in the water.
