Don’t Miss Special Apollo 13 Events at AirVenture

July 2, 2015 - This year marks the 45th anniversary of NASA’s Apollo 13 lunar mission and EAA will hold several activities featuring many of the people who worked together to turn a potential tragedy into an extraordinary success. Getting the crippled Apollo spacecraft back safely to earth is the stuff of legend, and EAA AirVenture Oshkosh visitors will get the full story from those heroes who achieved it. Scheduled to attend during the week are astronauts Jim Lovell and Fred Haise, flight directors Gene Kranz and Milt Windler, and Bill Reeves, lunar module flight controller.

Here’s what’s on the schedule:

First Wing/EAA Lifetime Dinner, Tuesday, July 21, 5 p.m., Gene Kranz will be the featured speaker for the annual gathering of EAA lifetime members and key supporters.

“Apollo 13” – Forum presentation in Honda Aircraft Forum Pavilion 7, Wednesday, July 22, 11:30-12:45, with flight directors Kranz and Windler, along with Reeves. Expect an overflow crowd at EAA’s largest forum venue in the Honda Forums Pavilion.

Evening program at Theater in the Woods, Wednesday, July 22, 6:30 p.m., see Commander Jim Lovell, lunar module pilot Haise, flight directors Kranz and Windler, and lunar module flight controller Reeves, in what will surely be one of this year’s epic occasions. David Hartman will host the program.

EAA Fly-In Theater on Friday, July 24, see the award-winning movie Apollo 13 (1995), starring Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise, and Ed Harris. Windler will introduce the film along with Reeves, who was on NASA’s Mission Operations team in Houston during the Apollo 13 mission. The EAA Fly-In Theater is presented by Ford Motor Company.
