Could Be Best Year Ever at Warbirds in Review

The Warbird Alley presentation area will once again overflow with military aviation enthusiasts this year for the stellar Warbirds in Review lineup for 2015.

July 17, 2015EAA Warbirds of America has another outstanding lineup of featured aircraft for this year’s Warbirds in Review program, a twice-daily event at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh featuring legendary military aircraft of the past 75 years and the heroic pilots who flew them.

The presentations give attendees a rare chance to see such aviation legends as Bud Anderson, Bob Hoover, Patrick Brady, and others up close with aircraft types they flew in combat, testing, or training.

This year will highlight veterans and aircraft from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan. We encourage all veterans to join us and be recognized with a special gift sponsored by Fagen Fighters WWII Museum in Granite Falls, Minnesota.

“The Warbirds in Review programs alone are worth the price of AirVenture admission,” said Bill Fischer, Warbirds of America executive director. “Combine that with all the Warbird aircraft, flying activities, and everything else at Oshkosh, there is no place in the world that compares for the true aviation enthusiast.”

Warbirds in Review presentations take place at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. daily, July 20-25, in the Warbird Alley presentation area. Preceding the presentations (at 9:15 and 12:15), Warbirds Living History Group will host educational demonstrations on flight gear associated with the upcoming aircraft. Theresa Eaman will entertain attendees with stirring renditions of popular songs of the day.

Former Good Morning America host David Hartman will be the moderator for all of the presentations beginning on Tuesday afternoon. The Warbirds in Review Jumbotron will also air programming from Sleeping Dog Productions throughout the day.

Here are the presentations scheduled for the week:

Monday July 20

10 a.m. - Entry level Warbirds – liaison aircraft: Aeronca L-3B Little B owned by Jim Busha, Oshkosh, Wisconsin; Ryan PT-22 Dewline Squadron owned by Kurt Landis, Canyon, Texas; Cessna TL-19A Birddog owned by Mike Weinfurter, Rhinelander, Wisconsin; and a de Havilland DHC-1 Chipmunk Alvin owned by Steve Buchelt, Valparaiso, Indiana. Karyn J. Taylor, daughter of Maj. Welton I. Taylor, will tell her father’s story: a liaison pilot with the 93rd Infantry Division. His book, Two Steps from Glory, will be on sale in Warbird Merchandise where Karyn will be available for autographs at 11 a.m.

1 p.m. - FG1D Corsair, owned by Cavanaugh Flight Museum. One of 120 Corsair IVs ordered from Goodyear Aircraft Corp. for the British Royal Navy, it was delivered to the U.S. Navy as the end of the war approached. The paint scheme honors Maj. Archie “Ace in a Day” Donahue who scored five kills with his Corsair in one engagement over Guadalcanal in May 1943, five more over Okinawa in 1945, and 14 overall aerial victories. Speaking will be Jim Cavanaugh and Doug Jeanes of the Cavanaugh Flight Museum.

Tuesday, July 21

10 a.m. - de Havilland DH-98 Mosquito, Military Aviation Museum, Virginia Beach, Virginia. Known as The Wooden Wonder because of its mostly wood construction, “Mossies” were prized for maneuverability and speed thanks to dual Rolls Royce Merlin engines. This particular airplane, number KA114, was originally built in Canada in 1945 so it never saw combat in WWII. The Military Aviation Museum of Virginia Beach, Virginia, acquired the aircraft in 2004 and had it completely restored by Avspecs Ltd. in New Zealand over an eight-year period.

1 p.m. - Anatomy of a Restoration: P-51B Mustang Berlin Express owned by Max Chapman of Jackson, Wyoming, and P-51D Mustang Sierra Sue II owned by Paul Ehlen of Bloomington, Minnesota. These two airplanes are expected to vie for prestigious aircraft awards this year for Pacific Fighters, Idaho Falls, Idaho, represented by John Muszala Sr. and John Jr., and Air Corps Aviation, Bemidji, Minnesota, represented by Erik Hokuf.

Wednesday, July 22

10 a.m. P-51 Ole Yeller with owner John Bagley and Bob Hoover, the pilot who made it famous. Autographed copies of Bob’s book Forever Flying will be available in Warbird Merchandise. Note: The books will be pre-signed. With respect and consideration for Hoover, we ask that you come prepared to have your photo taken with him rather than request an additional autograph. Hoover will be there at 2 p.m. for this photo opportunity.

1 p.m. - F-22, F-16: Along with legacy airplanes and veterans, we also recognize those who currently protect our freedoms. Maj. Ray Fowler is an active warbird pilot typically seen at Oshkosh in a Mustang, P-40, B-17, or others. Last year Ray was in Afghanistan flying the F-16 Fighting Falcon with the 187th Fighter Wing, Alabama Air National Guard. At press time, attendance of an F-16 aircraft is pending Defense Department approval, we’ll have the F-22 in reserve with Maj. John Cummings, native of nearby Appleton, Wisconsin, the nationwide 2015 demo pilot for F-22. Our very own warbird volunteer, Mike Wagnon, F-22 Lead Aeronautical Engineer, will also participate in this program.

Thursday, July 23

10 a.m. – UH-1 Huey, owned by Army Aviation Heritage Foundation, with Medal of Honor recipient Maj. Gen. Patrick Brady. Brady, author of Dead Men Flying, will talk about the Bell UH-1 Iroquois Huey. On January 6, 1968, he used three Hueys to evacuate 51 seriously wounded men, many of whom would have perished without prompt medical treatment. The Army Aviation Heritage Foundation will fly its Huey from Atlanta to Oshkosh in support of Brady’s appearance. (Flights are available.)

1 p.m. - P-51s Old Crow B and D Models, featuring Col. C.E. “Bud” Anderson with aircraft owners Jack Roush and Jim Hagedorn. WWII Triple Ace Anderson flew the P-51 Old Crow while assigned to the 357th Fighter Group “Yoxford Boys,” 8th Air Force, at Leiston Field, United Kingdom. The 357th shot down 609 enemy aircraft in only 15 months, a pace no other fighter group equaled and producing 42 aces - more than any other group. Anderson’s 16 1/4 victories led all others and today he is the leading living ace of World War II. Anderson’s book To Fly & Fight will be on sale in the Warbird store, where he will sign autographs at 2 p.m.

Friday, July 24

10 a.m. – North American F-100 Super Sabre, with pilots Dick Rutan and Gen. Charles Boyd, owner Dean “Cutter” Cutshall. Rutan will talk about his Air Force career and his service in Vietnam flying the F-100. As a retired four-star U.S. Air Force general, Boyd is a highly decorated combat pilot with more than 2,400 flight hours in F-100s and F-105s during the Vietnam War. Shot down on April 22, 1966, he spent 2,488 days as a prisoner of war. The North American F-100 Super Sabre was the first U.S. Air Force fighter capable of supersonic speed in level flight.

1 p.m. Boeing B-17 Bomber, owned by Yankee Air Force, with actor Gary Sinise, Lt. Dan from the movie Forrest Gump and of the TV series CSI: NY. Sinise’s uncle Jack was a B-17 navigator who served in World War II and a brother-in-law was a medic in Vietnam. The actor, whose Lt. Dan Band performs on Boeing Plaza Friday night, enthusiastically accepted our invitation to be a part of Warbirds in Review as an opportunity to recognize all veterans and pay tribute to the memory of those family members. The Yankee Air Force B-17 will be a fitting backdrop for this program and will be open for tours on Warbird Alley.

Saturday, July 25

10 a.m. - Scat III P-38 and Scat XXVII F-4 Phantom, with Christina Olds’ tribute to her dad, ace pilot Robin Olds, U.S. Air Force. Scat III is the beautifully restored and maintained P-38J aircraft from the Fagen Fighters WWII museum, whose nose art was recently changed from Ruff Stuff to Scat III to honor Olds.

Ron and Evan Fagen will talk about the restoration, operation, and flight characteristics of this beautiful aircraft. Christina, is the author of Fighter Pilot: The Memoirs of Legendary ace Robin Olds. which will be available for sale in Warbird merchandise where Christina will be on hand at 11 a.m. to sign copies.

1 p.m. - P-51 Tuskegee Airmen, with Col. Charles McGee, plane owned by CAF Red Tail Squadron. McGee fought in World War II as one of the Tuskegee Airmen in the 332nd Fighter Group. A career officer in the U.S Air Force for 30 years, he holds a U.S. Air Force record of 409 fighter combat missions flown in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam - the highest three-war total of fighter combat missions of any pilot in U.S. Air Force history. The 332nd’s identifying marking was bright red tails on their fighters. Doug Rozendahl and Brad Lang will talk about the history and legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen and the “Red Tail” P-51.
